Evaluation Question 7- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at my preliminary task, I believe the purpose of creating it was to gather a better understanding of how to use the different equipment and how they function. It would also give me a better feeling working with equipment such as tripods as I haven't worked with tripods before. This was important as it gave me the opportunity to experiment with different camera techniques and angles so that after I could review it, I could see what camera angles and techniques were the most effective and would be ideal to include within my own sequence. Furthermore, it would also develop my editing skills further using Final Cut Pro X as I merged different clips together using transitions and filters. After creating the preliminary task I would then have the ability to identify my strengths and weaknesses. Due to the fact that this was my first time working with video cameras, tripods and Final Cut Pro X, it was vital that I identified my strengths and weakness so that I can work on and improve my weaker areas so that when it came to filming the final production I wouldn't struggle in these areas and wouldn't waste time.

From this preliminary task, I have learned a range of different camera angles and techniques such as the high/low angles, panning, zooming in/out and also mid shot. Also, after reviewing this different camera angels and techniques I learned about the effectiveness with the different angles and techniques. For example, I learned that using high angles made the characters look more weak and vulnerable which was ideal to use within my own final production as I could give the audience a different perspective. Furthermore, I also learned that it is vital to review your work in great detail as you may find mistakes in which could of been oblivious when filming. For example, when I was filming, it didn't come to my attention that the space that I was filming in would be impacting the audience as it makes the scene and production looks less professional and more amateur which means that the sequence won't be as effective on the audience resulting it to be less successful. In addition, I learned about different editing techniques using the software of Final Cut Pro X. From this, I learned about different editing techniques and filters that can cause a change in atmosphere and help the audience to become more engaged and build relationships. For example, I learned that involving a slow editing technique results in more suspense and tension being built up and helps to engage and impact the audience more and is more effective. Also, I learned about the different filters could impact the audience more by making the sequence more effective. For example, using a slightly blurred filter helps to make the frame look a point of view perspective therefore helping the audience to become more engaged.

From my preliminary task, there are various skills that I learned that helped me with my thriller film. Firstly, my knowledge that I gained about the use of various camera angles and techniques were very helpful towards my thriller film. This was because I wanted to include a variation in order to keep the audience engaged throughout, so using skills such as the zooming in helped my within my final thriller filler as it made the sequence more effective and impacted the audience more. Due to the fact that I had practice with this technique within my preliminary meant that I could deliver a better result within my final production meaning skills such as the zooming in and out were more smooth so impacts the audience more. Another skill that helped me within my final thriller film was the use of the tripod. I have not used the tripod before my preliminary task so it was important that I learned and developed new skills. Due to me being able to practice a range of shots with the tripod this meant that more time could be saved and also I could deliver a smoother result instead of a unstable one which was seen in the preliminary task. Furthermore, editing skills that I learned within the preliminary task such as speeds of editing, filters and transitions helped me within my final thriller film. Within the preliminary task, I had the ability to use the software Final Cut Pro X to experiment with a range of techniques and see what impact they each created. For example, my knowledge that I gained within the speeds of editing I learned that it would be convenient to include a fast editing with a chase scene as I learned in the preliminary task that the fast editing makes the sequence more exciting and keeps the audience eager to continue watching and also creates a high level of tension as the intensity level increases. From this practising it was very useful in my final production as I already knew what each technique created and what type of impact they each created so it saved me time instead of experimenting every single technique and wasting time whereas I could just get on with it.

Evaluation Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Within my sequence that I created, the main character is a female called 'Bettie'. Bettie is the antagonist who has a lot of power and dominance and can overcome any other character. Within her role as the antagonist, she has a hidden identity of a cannibal and murders people this way by eating them. This  gender role is subversive as Bettie is a female and this gender is stereotypically the weakest. Typically, male characters tend to overcome any female characters as the females tend to be more weak making them more vulnerable. Furthermore, Bettie is represented through the hidden identity throughout the majority of the sequence so that her identity is not revealed and so that she blends in with the characters. This means at the point where her identity is revealed, the impact on the audience will be bigger and better as the audience would be more surprised and shocked that she is not the vulnerable character they thought she was. She is dressed in a casual manner such as jeans, white converse shoe and a black jacket on top of a jumper so that the identity isn't given away and to look normal. Also, this will help create a more relatable relationship between her and the audience as she will look like any average teenage girl and our female target audiences will find that this appearance is similar to their own therefore resulting in a more relatable relationship. I have included this character so that the sequence creates a bigger surprise towards the audience and makes the sequence more unique as a female antagonist isn't common and would build better relationships. Betties representation only changes when the identity is revealed and at this point she now has the addition of blood around her mouth. This would appeal to the audience more as it would interest them more as it's something they haven't seen before so they become more engaged and build an alternative relationship. Furthermore, they become more interactive as the female is having more dominance than the males and this is unusual within any type of genre.This also appeals to the target audience as they are the same age range at 15-17 so they can find it more relatable as it can be a similar scenario to their everyday lives so it benefits them more and they have the ability to build a better relationship. Also, Betties character as a student can relate to the audience as the majority of the target audience will still be in school so this makes the character more relatable.

There are also two other characters who are both male however their role within the sequence isn't as big as the role of Bettie. Both of these male characters are very similar as they share similar characteristics. Both characteristics are represented in a subversive ways; Kane end up being one of Betties victims so this displays that he is obviously weak and not strong enough. This is subversive representation of this gender as males are stereotypically stronger than female however this male character appears to be weak and clearly was vulnerable. The other male seen within the sequence is Freddie. Freddie's character hears Kane scream after Bettie attacks him and then shortly after he discovers Betties true identity. Once Bettie reveals her identity to him, we see a view of him portraying a frightened facial expression which shows that he is clearly fearing this female character. Furthermore, just by the expression we can see that she is more mentally dominant. This is a subversive representation of this gender as this male is being cowardly towards a female which isn't expected of this gender as males are expected to overcome females both mentally and physically. Both these characters appeal to the audience as the audience automatically become more engaged as they are shocked that two male characters are both acting in a subversive way. Also, the feel more sympathetic towards this characters and build a more closer and trusted relationship because they are keeping the same identity throughout in comparison to Bettie who changes which causes a change in the relationship with her as she betrays the audience. This appeals to our target audience as they are the same age group as these characters and also are living the same role as a student as a 15-17 years old therefore they can find it more relatable. Also, the target audience would feel more engaged as they see two males being weak towards one female so they may change their opinions and views of who is the more dominant gender.

Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Firstly, the brief was to create a two minute opening sequence for a thriller genre by researching into a range of elements in which would help contribute towards the planning of the sequence. Before we created our sequence, we were allocated to groups consisting of 3 group members. In my group there was myself, Elizabeth Cooper and Kane Faulkner-Wild. Within our group there were various production roles that were assigned to different members of the group. Firstly, the roles of 'Director of Photography' and 'MES co-ordinator' were assigned to me. This meant I was in charge of what the camera is filming exactly and what the positioning of the objects within the frame were. Secondly, Elizabeth's roles were 'Screenplay writer' and 'Music producer'. This meant that she was in charge of creating the base narrative for the sequence and creating the different types of music and sound effects to be included within the sequence. Kane's roles were 'Director' and 'Producer' which meant that he had control of gathering the group and controlling the different activities and what the different things to be produced were, Both Elizabeth and Kane took the roles of being the actors in which they were assigned to play the role of the two main characters (antagonist and victim). All three group members took the role of being editors as we all had different editing ideas and techniques that we wanted to include. Furthermore, the responsibility was to insert different editing techniques at different points throughout the sequence to build up different elements e.g slow editing when the suspense is building up. As mentioned previously, my roles of 'Director of photography' and 'MES co-ordinator', my responsibility was too control how and what was being filmed by including a variation of different techniques using the camera. Also, I had the responsibility of controlling what/how the actual scene was layed out. This was by how the characters and objects were positioned and represented and also the lighting of the scene. The layout of the scene was in my power. I believe myself and my group worked well as a group and we all took great power and responsibility in our different roles. Furthermore, our combinations of different ideas and techniques helped to make our sequence more captivating and conventional. I believe that we have created a very successful sequence as we included a wide of range of different thriller conventions and key elements such as tensions, suspense, shock and surprise being built up throughout which helped to engage the audience more which helped to contribute on how successful our thriller was.


Firstly, there are various conventions that are included within any thriller genre. Some of these conventions are the use of an antagonist and protagonist. This means that the films contains a villain (antagonist) and also a hero/good guy (antagonist). For example, these conventions can evidently seen within 'Batman' films. This could be by Batman himself being the protagonist as he plays the role of the hero within the film as he saves many lives. The role of the antagonist can be seen within the role of the Joker as he takes many peoples lives away and is seen as the villain. These are essential within a thriller as they determine the type of relationship that is built between them and the audience, resulting in the audience to engage more within the film. Within my sequence, we included the role of the antagonist and included it within Elizabeth's character as she murdered Kane's character.  Also, another convention is the use of hidden identity. This is conventional as it helps to create more tension, suspense and enigma which then helps the audience to become more engaged within the film as they want to know who the antagonist is. This conventional can evidently be seen in 'Insidious 2' as they do not reveal who the murder is. I included this for half my sequence as Kane's disappearance was a mystery until another character showed the audience that it was Elizabeth's innocent character. I included this convention within my own sequence as I found it contributes to the high tension levels and keeps the atmosphere mysterious which is ideal for a thriller film. Furthermore, another convention is the use of blood. This is conventional as it builds up a high intensity and tension level as it will immediately alert the audience that someone has died which would engage them more within the film. For example, this convention can be evidently seen within films such as 'Saw V' as when the victim is getting murdered the audience can see his blood within the camera frame. I included this convention within my sequence at the point where Elizabeth's character reveals to the camera the blood around her mouth suggesting that she has just eaten someone. This is ideal, as the audience are now finding out her true identity which is helping them to engage more as they want to know whether there is anything else they don't know.

In my sequence, we  have included a range of generic conventions such as the use of low-key lighting. This was conventional as it contributed to the high levels of suspense and makes the atmosphere more mysterious. This could be evidently seen within our sequence throughout the whole sequence as we felt if we only used low key lighting then the narrative would be too predictable and wouldn't impact the audience as much as it could therefore resulting in the sequence not reaching its full potential. We discussed that if we use the low key lighting  For instance, at the start when Bella goes missing the low key lighting suggest that this is mysteriously dangerous behaviour and as the light doesn't brighten as the sequence continues, this suggest that the danger is within the region. Also, it engages the audience more as it makes the scenario more dangerous and builds the tension. I also included the element of blood within the sequence at the point where Elizabeth's character turns to the camera to reveal the blood around her mouth suggesting that she has just murdered someone by eating them. This could be identified at the point where the close up camera reveals Betties true identity. This is conventional as it raises the tension that she has just eaten Kane and also states that someone has died which then builds up the suspense and intensity of whether there will be a second victim and engages the audience more by making them feel paranoid. Moreover, I have also included the element of an antagonist in which could be identified when Bettie faces the camera and the blood is shown around her mouth. This is conventional as it displays that she has killed someone and engages the audience more as the relationship has changed now that her true identity has been revealed. Furthermore, this can also be unconventional towards the genre as commonly the role of the antagonist is played by a male as they tend to be more dominant and powerful than a female, which changes the relationship with the audience as it builds a sudden shock. I not only followed the generic conventions but also challenged the conventions because I wanted to make my sequence more unique because if I followed a typical thriller storyline then the audience would be shocked and could easily predict what is going to happen which then ruins the impact that the sequence has on the audience whereas if I challenge the conventions by experimenting with a range of different conventions then not only is the sequence less predictable but the audience would be more impacted as they would be more surprised. For example, I included a female antagonist as it would be a bigger surprise towards the audience as they would typically predict one of the male characters to be the antagonist because of their characteristics.

My opening sequence defines the genre as it consist of a range of different generic conventions such as hidden identity, low key lighting, antagonist etc and builds up the key elements (shock, surprise, suspense & tension) throughout which is essential for this genre. Also, a small fright is included to give the audience a small scare and jump so that they do not lose interest. Furthermore, it states and displays the antagonist and victims and helps the relationships to be built. I can relate my sequence to successful thrillers such as Saw V. The different Saw movies are all famous successful thriller films as they contain a range of conventions and also give the fright that a thriller needs. In Saw, the antagonist is 'Jigsaw' which is a evil masked doll so isn't a typical antagonist. Just like in my sequence, I use a female that murders people which is unusual as female are not usually expected to take part in a role of a murderer, Also, Saw films consist of a low key lighting which makes the atmosphere appear more dangerous and mysterious as it includes a lot of tension and suspense. The use of low key lighting can also be seen throughout my sequence as it helps build the tension and engages the audience more. The title of my sequence is called 'DEVOUR' which is another word for 'Eaten'. This title is conventional towards a thriller genre as the word 'eaten' suggest that something has been murdered caused by it being eaten suggesting an animal or cannibal is the antagonist within the sequence which builds the tension up. We chose to use 'Devour'  has most people are unfamiliar with this term so the storyline wouldn't be predictable and ruin the impact on the audience which would then make our sequence more successful.

Audience feedback is vital towards any production because it is important that the producers understand how impacted their target audience are. Furthermore, the use of feedback also gives the opportunity for improvements to be made so that the audience can be more impacted and this would then ensure that the production is more successful. From the feedback that the production team can make points on the strong and weak points within the production and make adjustments to ensure that the production is improved. Knowing any weaknesses is beneficial as you know what parts of your production are not working and it will help improve the production. It is also important because you can make improvements on what the audience say. It is also a hard process as many people will have many different opinions and views but selecting the majority of peoples opinions could make your production attract more audiences. In addition, it can made a production more popular as the more people that enjoy the production then the message will spread more and attract more viewers which also then contribute on how successful the production is. Audience feedback also gives the ability for the production to be improved from another persons perspective.

We received our audience feedback from our target audience from various different strategies such as from the screening of production, questionnaires, posting our video on YouTube and focus group. We filmed and created our rough cut and used the software 'Final Cut Pro X' to add our different elements such as editing, sounds etc. Once this was created, we uploaded the rough cut video to YouTube and asked the audience to post their opinions and feedback about the sequence so that we could review the audience's feedback. We also viewed our rough cut once it had been completed and produced a screening production for our class so that they had the ability to give their opinions and feedback towards us so that we know how to improve the sequence. Another way that we analysed our audience feedback was creating questionnaires. This had taken place before we created the rough cut as the purpose of this was to find out more about the audience and their interest. This would benefit our sequence as we would have a better knowledge of what the audience would want to see within a thriller sequence and we could also analyse what they find 'typical' so that we could avoid that to give them a better shock. I find that the best way in which we reviewed the audience feedback was the process of uploading the rough cut to YouTube as I find that was the most benefiting way to view the feedback as the audience could watch the sequence numerous times and have the ability to give more feedback to us. Furthermore, this gave us a wide range of audience in comparison to the other strategies as the audience's in the other strategies were limited which meant that we wasn't able to reach our full potential whereas the YouTube method meant that anyone could watch the video and post the feedback; this feedback would benefit our production and the film industry as it gave us the opportunity to review different opinions and take on board the comments that they gives us and make changes to our production. Furthermore, this would make our production would be more successful than before as now we would give the audience a production in which they edited to make it suited towards their interest. From the production being successful, this would benefit the film industry as it would attract more popularity as it is now satisfying more people, therefore making the production more successful and also increases the economic income as a result as the viewers increase. 

POSITIVE COMMENTS

The first positive comment that we received was based on the sound effects and music that we included within our sequence. The audience enjoyed this element within the sequence as they found that this was a positive impact as the music contributed in helping the tension levels build up. This was effective as it helped the audience to become more engaged within the sequence and made them become more on the edge of their seats which was a positive reaction. Clearly the music behind used in the sequence was impacting the audience if it helped build up the tension and intensity. I believe the audience were most affected by the music where Freddie was walking up behind Bettie as that is where the music levels were the most intense and dramatic in the tension build up. I am happy with this particular feedback that I have received as the audience are reacting to the sequence in the way that I intended them to. I felt if we were too include music that would build up then they would become more engaged and would react better making it more conventional towards the thriller genre. 

The second positive feedback that we received was based on the narrative of our sequence. We received the positive feedback on this element because the audience found that this was a unique narrative. They enjoy the narrative as it was unusual from a typical thriller narrative. The use of a cannibal is unusual therefore the audience were more engaged as the audience are not use to seeing this type of story line so they are more interested. Furthermore, the narrative is unexpected as the audience wouldn't expect the only female character to be the antagonist as usually the female character tends to be the weak, vulnerable character so this creates more of a surprise when the identity is revealed. I am happy with this particular feedback that I have received as my intentions have gone to plan. Me and the rest of my group wanted to create a unique narrative so that the audience would be more interested and engaged as it would be something that they haven't seen before. Furthermore, we felt if we was to go along and create a unique narrative then the audience would build more of an interest. 

The third positive comment that we received was based on the idea of a hidden identity of the antagonist. The audience felt that this was a positive impact towards them as they felt that this created the shock and the surprise that a thriller genre needs as it makes it more conventional towards a thriller genre. Furthermore, they fund that this idea was a good impact as none of the audience expected the female character (Bettie) to be the antagonist. As said previously, typically the female characters would be the weak, vulnerable so when Bettie's identity is revealed towards the end of the sequence this creates a sudden surprise towards the audience. From this point the audience have the ability to create a different relationship with her as the audience perspective changes once they realize that she is the antagonist. This is unexpected for the audience as they expect one of the boys to be the antagonist as they can easily over power the one female however this is not the case. I am very happy with this feedback that I have received as the hidden identity help the audience to become more engaged as this was a shock towards them as it was something that the audience was not expecting. Furthermore, I also am happy with this feedback because this made the thriller more successful as it managed to successful create key elements of a thriller such as shock and surprise which made it more conventional and successful.

CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS

The first constructive comment that I received was based on the shot where Bettie reveals her hidden identity as the lighting was uneven. We received this feedback purely because we were delayed on the filming schedule so we rushed the last scenes. Due to the weather becoming dark quickly, we had to film Bettie's reveal in the dark because of this we had to film her scene in a darker location so by this the lighting of the sequence was uneven in contrast to the rest of the sequence. This made the sequence less successful as it was easily noticeable. I find that this was disappointing as it let down the whole of our sequence. We included all different various elements too build up the tension and intensity and then it gets let down by the lighting the background so all the tension levels drop again which makes the sequence less sequence. This would be a part of the sequence in which we definatley need to be edited as this is the lowest part of our sequence and is the let down of the whole sequence as the lighting is easily noticeable therefore makes our sequence looks less professional and loses the audience's focus on the subject.

Next, the constructive feedback that we received was to include and create more shots. The audience suggested that we were to add in more shot in order for the narrative to be developed even further. The audience made suggestions such as including shots such as Freddie's face reaction of when he see's Bettie's true identity. The audience suggested this so that they can see Freddie's facial expression when he see's Bettie along with the body language that follows after. I believe that this suggestion is very reasonable as it would clearly help to impact the audience at a higher level. Furthermore, I believe that this would help the audience to build a better relationship towards Freddie as the audience would have the ability to see how Freddie is reacting. Also, I believer that we could use camera and editing techniques such as zooming out and reaction shot so that the audience can see the intricate details on his face therefore giving the ability for a better relationship to be built.

Lastly, the third constructive feedback comment that we received was that the entire sequence needs to be slightly longer. This could be done by adding more shots however since we only need roughly just over 30 seconds, we could extend the sequence by adding more editing technique such as slow editing in order that the sequence can be made longer. Furthermore, we could also drag more scenes on by including more effects so that the 2 minutes time period could be filled up in a more efficient way. I find that this is useful feedback for our group to receive as we are too busy filming and creating all the elements for our sequence that we do not acknowledge how short our sequence is and this makes us more aware of the timings that are too be used within the sequence given that the sequence has to be at least 2 minutes. I also think that it's important for us to extend the sequence as I believe if the narrative is being explained too quickly then there is a higher possibility that the audience will get confused as they will miss out on the main focus's and this will impact on the reaction's and relationships towards the characters that we intended for them to have making the sequence less successful.

Based on the various comments and feedback that we have received, there are changes that we as a group have to adjust. Firstly, we need to edit Bettie's identity reveal scene because of the odd lighting in the background. We will adjust and edit this scene by re-filming this particular part at an earlier time within the day so that the lighting will be lighter however if the lighting is brighter than the rest of the sequence we always have the ability to use our editing techniques such as adding filters to make the lighting more low key. This would make our sequence more successful as all the lighting's would now be the same so now the audience can focus on the actual sequence and narrative rather than losing the focus caused by lighting variations. Secondly, we need to edit the sequence by adding more shots such as adding a reaction shot of when Freddie see's Bettie bloody face. After this has been included the narrative can carry on of when Freddie starts running away. This would make our sequence more successful as the audience will be impacted as they will have the ability to build a better relationship with Freddie as they start to feel more sympathetic relationship which also help to engage more. Lastly, we need to fill the 2 minute space by making the sequence longer which could be done by editing the sequence to make it longer such as adding slow editing to drag the scenes on. Furthermore, we can make the sequence longer by adding more shots, for instance we could add a shot of Bettie at the end of the sequence to see her expression towards Freddie.

Opening Scene Narration - Miss Miller

Opening Scene Narration 

Within the first frame of the sequence, we show show the display of the main setting where the sequence is going to be set which is a dark, isolated forest. This will help give the audience a brief introduction of where the sequence is being set however this will only last a few seconds. There is no iconography being displayed as we want to give the audience a focus of the setting so that they can start to engage within the film more. Furthermore, because of this focus on the shot there will be no costume and hair&make-up because there are no characters in the scene yet. Also, because of the characters not being in the shot yet there cannot be any facial expressions and body language being in the frame yet. However, the lighting and colour of the frame will be low-key and mysteriously dark. In addition the positioning of the characters would be unseen as there are no characters within the scene. The only thing that can be displayed within the frame is the setting of the sequence, and we would have this within the center of the frame so that all the focus is on the setting. With regards to editing, it would be a slow editing being used over the panning of the forest to build up the suspense within the atmosphere. We included a non diegetic nature sound on top of a non diegetic haunted sound effect to start building the suspense. 

After this frame is displayed, we show a high angle of the characters walking into the forests that the audience can have a clear introduction to the characters based on their appearance. The characters would be walking into the forest as a group and having a conversation amungst themselves. The audience at first will not be able to have the ability to hear what the characters say as the frame would still have the continuation of the music from the previous frame being played. After a few seconds, the music will fade away so that the audience can hear the character speak which will then determine the type of relationship that is being built. However, the non diegetic music will still be lightly played but won't be loud enough for the focus to be on it as we want the audience to hear what the characters are saying so that they have the ability to build a relationship with the audience. The iconography within the frame would be Bella (dog) who will be walking with the characters and the audience will have a clear display of this. With regards to their appearance such as costume, hair and make-up it would be kept casual and all characters would be based on the same level of appearance so that no characters stand out and steal the focus from each other. The lighting&colour of the frame would be slightly brighter than the previous scene as the mood of this frame would need a more positive atmosphere so the bright colours would make it more positive and help the audience build a better relationship with the characters as there would be no sign of negativity within the frame however it will still be kept at low-key. All the characters will have a similar facial expression and body language so that they are all seen the same from the audience's perspective, they would all have a modern body language as the scenario is the characters taking a forest walk with one of the characters group. They would have happy, positive facial expressions so that when the sudden shock of the dog disappearing there would be a clear contrast in the facial expressions and this would then help build up the tension and create better relationships between the audience and the characters. The continuation of the previous sound effects will occur over this frame however the use of on screen diegetic sound will be included aswell which would come from the characters conversation. We would use invisible editing at this point as we don't want the audience to suspect anything yet and we intend to build up the atmosphere and tension instead of giving the concept away right at the start so that when all the built up tension is built up it will be more of a shock when it's all revealed.

Next the audience would see is when the characters start a conversation between themselves so that the audience can start to build a basic relationship with each of the characters so the only sounds that the audience can hear is the on screen sound coming from the characters voices. This would give the audience a brief introduction of the characters and would be a starting point to start building the relationships. The setting of this scene would be inside the forest where all the characters are walking together so that there is a clear display of the closeness between the group. The camera shots would be close up's of when each character is speaking so that this enables the audience to be more focused and engaged on what each characters is saying which then gives the ability for the relationship to be better. The characters don't change any clothing, hair or make-up throughout the sequence so there appearance would be the same as before. There would be no iconography being displayed as the dog won't be able to be seen within the frame. The facial expressions and body language of the characters would be kept at a normal level as at this part they are only having a general conversation with each other and no unusual behaviour has occurred. The positioning of the character would be so that only the character that is talking and the character next to the one that is talking will be in the center of the frame while none of the other characters are seen. We would use a shot reverse shot editing technique to display a clear conversation. We have chosen to include the shot reverse shot editing technique at this point as the conversation that is being taken place is containing different people in the frame each time so this technique would be more convenient as it would give the audience a better understanding and help them to engage more within the sequence. Again, we would have a on screen diegetic sound from where the characters are talking to each other and we would include a faded nature sound behind this to keep the realism.

Once this is shown, we then move on to show the characters playing with Bella (dog) by playing catch with her using sticks. The setting here is further within the forest and the audience will be able to identify this as they can now see how isolated the area is. The iconography being used here would be Bella and the stick that is being thrown for her. Again as said previously, the appearance of the characters does not change throughout  with regards to costume, hair and make-u so they are displayed the same as before. Their facial expressions and body language would be playful and happy as they are now bonding with the dog. The lighting and colour would be low-key however still have a small amount of brightness as we want there to be a clear contrast when it changes. The positioning of the characters would be that they are are closely together each taking turns to throw the stick for Bella and that they are all positioned closer to the edge of the frame so that the audience can see where Bella is running to aswell. The sounds being used would be the non diegetic nature in the background, overlapped with Bella barking occasionally and the characters mumbling in the background. We would use the panning technique to show when Bella is chasing after the stick and when she is returning with it. We would use a slow editing for every time that she disappears and returns. This will occur 3 times.We have decided to use this editing technique because it would help build up the suspense, tension and the mysterious atmosphere as the audience suspect something bad each time it slows down as they think something bad is going to happen to the dog so would help the audience engage more as they want to know whats going to happen.

After this has happened, after the third round that the stick is thrown Bella doesn't return and ends up disappearing. When this moment is recognised by the other characters a non diegetic dark mysterious music suddenly occurs to show a sign of mysterious behaviour. Also we would use a slow editing at this point to build up the tension, The setting at this point would be the same as before. There is no iconography being used at this point as the dog has now disappeared. The characters are all displayed the same as before. This time they body language and their facial expressions show a sudden change to a worried/panic look as they don't know what has happened to Bella. The lighting and colour of this would now be all low-key to emphasise the danger that is occurring within the forest. The positioning of the characters would be that they are all spread over the frame and then we would show a separate frame of the isolation of where the dog is suppose to be returning. We show close ups of the characters facial expressions to show their confusion and panic. We would use the reaction shot editing technique so that the audience have the ability to see the intricate details within the characters facial expression, which would then determine what type of relationship is too be built with that particular character which would then help to the audience engaging more.

Once this occurs, we will show the characters discussing and arranging to split up into pairs and look for Bella in different areas of the forest. We will show separate long shot's of each set of pairs looking for Bella. The setting will stay the same however the area's within the background will change for each pair as they are all looking in different areas. We will play a non diegetic sound of a tense, eery music behind the voice's of the characters shouting for Bella. We will use a fast editing for each of the pairs to build up the tension and intensity. Appearance will not change on any of the characters. There will be no iconography being used at this point of the sequence. The facial expressions and body language will be worried and nervous as the characters don't know what to expect and they are all starting to get scared. The positioning of the characters would be each set of pairs would be in the center of the frame to show the focus on each individual. We will use the combination of panning and long shot to show each set of pairs looking for Bella. At this point, we would use the linking shot editing technique as we show the 2 different sets of search parties taken place as the characters are all in the same scenario and are all thinking the same so that would help us to show the similarities between the sets so we are able to link the two sets.

The sequence never display where Bettie&Kane go after the group split up as we do not show them two searching for Bella. Once we reach the last set of pairs we use a point of view camera to show one of the characters perspective of seeing Bettie crouched down next to Kane who is laying on the ground not moving. The setting is slightly more isolated than the previous ones so this would build a higher level of tension. We will use an off screen sound of the character questioning what Bettie doing and what is going on with the addition of heavy, fast breathing to show the panic. Although this would be the main focused sound, we will also play a parallel scary, tense music which gets louder as the characters get closer to Bettie to build up the tension. We also include the non diegetic sound of the characters walking and crunching on top of the leaves which also contributes to the high level of tension. There is no iconography being used at this point. There is no facial expressions being displayed either as Bettie as her back faced towards the characters who's perspective we are observing. The lighting and colour of this is much more dark and intense than any other scene as this is building up to the point where Bettie reveal's her identity. Bettie's back is faced towards the camera to show that she is hiding herself away from everyone. Her body blocks most of Kane but the audience will be able to see that he is laying on the ground and not moving suggesting that he is dead. Both characters are positioned in the center of the frame so that the attention and focus is immediately on Bettie and Kane. As the characters are getting closer to them the non diegetic music increases and the editing we use is slow so that the intensity rises immediately. At this point we use slow editing to build up the suspense and the tension which would contribute in the audience becoming more engaged as they suspect that Bettie is doing something abnormal and start to create assumptions.

Once the characters get close enough, one of them reaches out their hand to tap Bettie on the shoulder to question her, but before they get the chance to touch her, Bettie sharply turns around with a demonized expression and blood all around her mouth suggesting she has either bitten or eating part of Kane (Cannibal identity). When she turns around a parallel loud screeching noise is played which immediately alerts the audience giving them a sudden shock and surprise. This will be shown as a extreme close up to make her seem more threatening and frightening. Her costume and hair will be kept the same however the make up will change as she will now have blood around her mouth. We will use a fast editing at this point so that it immediately captures the audience and engages them more. Due to the fact that a extreme close up is being shown here we will not have the ability to see any setting or iconography within the frame. The lighting and colour will still continue to be low key as the dark colours represent death. Her face will fill the frame so that she would now be the main focus. We would use a fast editing so that it is more sudden and will be a bigger shock to the audience which would then determine the relationship that is to be built with Bettie as they will now be aware of her identity and will fear her. 

Once her identity is revealed, the two characters that discovered this would have a close up of their face to show the pure terror that they are feeling and so that the audience can have a clear focus on their expressions of them screaming so that this would help the relationship that is being built with them as the audience will start to feel sympathy for them. Their body language would display them feeling scared and nervous as this is a sudden shock to them aswell as the audience. The setting would be the dark forest within the background and there would be no iconography at this point. These characters would have the same costume, hair and make up as they did before, they would just have different facial expressions. The lighting and colour would still be low key but won't be as dark as when Bettie's face was shown. Both these characters would fill the frame of the characters so that the audience can have a clear focus. We will do a small zoom on this moment so emphasise the panic. Again, we will include the use of fast editing to build up the tension within the sequence so that this can represent the victim's heart beat as it is fast because they are terrified of Bettie. 

Lastly, once these characters run away from Bettie to notify the remaining characters, Bettie goes after them but she walks slowly while the remaining characters are running for their lives and at this point is where the chase scene begins. We will be using the editing technique of montage to show the chase scene as it will help build up the tension. We will use parallel and non diegetic intense music in the background to emphasise the danger that is occurring. While the remaining characters still have the appearance, Bettie's continues to have Kane's blood around her mouth. The setting would start to change as the characters start to run back towards the entrance of the forest. There will be no iconography being used. Bettie will have an intimidating facial expressions with an over powering body language as she goes after the remaining characters while the rest are terrified of her which can be seen through their expressions and they are running away from her in a cowardly form. The lighting and colour would vary as it would flash fast throughout black and white to display a mystery of whether the characters are going to escape; white symbolizing the positivity that they will escape and the black symbolizing they are going to die. The positioning of the characters would be Bettie is isolated on her own while the others are grouped together. At the end once the characters lose sight of Bettie, they stop running and stand together confused and looking around seeing where she is not acknowledging that she is behind a nearby tree. The last shot would be an over the shoulder camera technique over Bettie's shoulder to show a small perspective that she is seeing of the remaining characters not sighting her. After a few seconds we will then insert the fade to black editing technique to end the sequence as it will create an enigma as we don't know what's going to happen, whether the character will survive or not or whether Bettie will be defeated. 

Risk Assessment - Miss Georgiou

Risk Assessment 

A risk assessment table is a table that list various different types of hazards along with methods that could prevents these hazards. These have been created for safety so that less damage is caused and so that people know how to prevent these or solve them. These make everyone more aware of their surroundings and make them more cautious. It is important to consider and be aware of the risk before filming the sequence to avoid any little minor or severe harm done to anyone. Furthermore, it would also make everyone more knowledgeable in terms of safety and give them the benefit of knowing how to avoid these harms. Also, it's vital to know before filming so that we can bring appliances and equipment with us in case there is an injury or difficult situation e.g ladder if member is stuck in tree, torch if it's too dark to see. In addition, it's very important that all members are kept out of any potential harm as this could then impact the whole group therefore impacting on the sequence, if one member gets harmed this could lead them to not being able to be present within the sequence. Also, there is no adults or supervisors with us, to we need to be as knowledgeable as possible so that we know how to avoid these risks and also how to deal with them. 

The risk assessment will help assist me within my filming as it will make all members aware of the potential risk and also give them all a better understanding of how we as a group could avoid and deal with this risks. Furthermore, it will also help us with our filming as we will know where to place objects while we are filming to avoid harm and damage e.g we will keep all lose wire and objects to the side so that no one falls over and hurts themselves. It will also make all members that are part of this project aware of the consequences so they would be more cautious within their movements to avoid any harm. 

When we were filming we encountered more risk such as tripping over logs and sticks on the ground. This could of been prevented if we were looking where we were going and if we used a torch to see where we were walking in the dark. Furthermore, we also encountered stinging our hands on thorns and sharp bushes. This could of been prevented if we wore thicker materials such as gloves so that this wouldn't happen. Also we encountered treading in puddles which then caused any ground that we walking on afterwards to become more slippery. This could of been prevented if we wore clothing such as wellies or boots so that the surfaces were less slippery or if we were to avoid the puddles by looking where we was going using a torch.

Filming Schedule - Miss Georgiou

Filming Schedule 

 A filming schedule is a timetable that enables each member of the group to follow a clear structure of the process of the creation of the sequence. It's a table that displays what is to be filming on each chosen day and states exactly what is happening and what is needed. It will also show what characters are needed for each individual day as all characters may not be needed everyday. A filming schedule is very important to have in the process of our planning as it enables us to be more organised and also gives us a clear structure of what is happening on each day we film. Furthermore, this would also tell us what we need to prepare and bring to the scene on each day. In addition, it will also make it easier for us after we film so if we need to come back and film anything again due to any errors we can have a clear structure of what we need to do and what to prepare. The schedule will show who and what we need each time for different scenes. The schedule is also important because it will ensure that all members of the group will have a equally good understanding and structure of what is taken place when and where. 

We followed the filming schedule with the exception of few occasions where we had to keep rescheduling the days that we film due to illnesses within the group and also ensuring that all members could be present on the same days. Apart from the difficulty in terms of coming to an agreement on the days to film the sequence, we followed everything else that is displayed within the schedule. We also had to film certain parts again because previous lighting was unsuccessful as the lighting was too dark and did not provide the ability to see any of the characters therefore we had to do this again when the lighting was more sufficient. We had to make these minor changes, however because we kept to this fitted schedule in terms of all elements apart from the dates&times, our filming was successfully completed. 

In the future, to prevent these problems that have been created, we can carry out certain tasks such as checking the weather on each filming day so that we have the ability to see when the weather will be inconvenient within our filming therefore we can choose a day where the weather is suited towards our production. Furthermore, before we create the filming schedule it is vital that we discuss each members availability otherwise it will just delay the filming therefore giving us less time to improve and edit which would then make it less successful. Also, in the future we will plan earlier times so to prevent the lighting from becoming too dark and so that the weather does not disrupt our filming. In the future, if we were to follow these statements then our filming schedules can work sufficiently and prevent less disruptions and delays.  

Production Roles- Miss Miller

Production Roles

People need to be allocated specific roles when creating a film, so that it makes it easier for each member to focus on a specific element of the film and so that if one thing goes wrong within the sequence than only one person will have the responsibility. Also, people need to be allocated specific roles because different people will have different experience within different parts of the film. There are various roles within creating a film such as, producers, directors, actors, director of photography (cameraman), music producers, screenplay writer, MES Coordinators and editors. Producers are the main players in the filming industry. A producer will oversee each project from conception to completion and may also be involved in the marketing and distribution processes. Producers work closely with directors and other production staff on the shoot. The director positions each character within the frame in each scene and controls what is happening within the sequence. The director is simply the manager of the sequence. The role of the actors is to play the part/role of different characters within the sequence. The role of director of photography (cameraman) is to film the sequence using a sequence. Furthermore, the cameraman has to control the different camera shots and techniques and is responsible for these activities. The role of the music producers is to gather ideas for the different music to be used within the sequence and to control when and where these will be used within the sequence. The role of a screenplay writer is to create the narrative and story line for the sequence and to develop the initial idea into a well effective narrative. The role of the MES Coordinators is to decide on the costume+hair & make-up, iconography, lighting and setting. They will be in charge of what the characters need to where, what props will be used within the sequence, where the film is going to be set and what type of lighting will be included within the sequence. The role of editors is to edit the film once all the scenes have been filmed. They will need to be in charge of the different transitions between each frame and that speed of each scene. Also, they will need to be responsible of altering the sequence.


We decided on who would be doing what by the judgement of previous experience that we have had. We also allocated roles based on our different strengths with regards to our different techniques e.g Bettie is the most creative out of all member's therefore would be given the role of screenplay writer.

Me

As a group we decided that I would be responsible for the role of 'Director of photography' and 'MES Coordinators'. As a group, we decided that I would be the director of photography because I have had previous experience using camera's so the role of a cameraman would be ideal for the group. I have been allocated this role over the other members of my group as they have only a basic knowledge of cameras as they haven't had previous experience with cameras whereas I have so this role would be more suited towards me as I would be less likely to make mistakes and if I was to make mistakes they would be minimal. I am responsible for filming different scenes which make up the 2 minute sequence and to take charge of the condition of the camera. Within this role, I have successfully filmed our 2 minute sequence using a variety of different camera techniques and shots at various parts of the sequence. Also, I have positioned the camera within different parts of the forest so that there is a range of locations of the camera being used. This would make the filming/editing easier by having this specific job because my experience would help the filming process be faster as I would know what I'm doing. The editing will also be easier as I have a good knowledge of different camera techniques, I would know when and where to include techniques such as slow/fast editing and I could film specifically depending on what editing style I am going to use.

Also, as a group we decided that I would also take the responsibility of being MES Coordinator. We came to this conclusion, as we chose this role for me after I was assigned to director of photography so we thought that it would make sense as I would be the main person who is seeing the camera's viewpoint as I am filming everything, so based on my judgement on what look's good and what doesn't, I will be able to determine what mes en scene elements are better suited at different parts of the sequence. Also, the actors who are taking part in the sequence won't have the same perspective that I have as I would have a bigger range of view so my judgement would be better than theirs. Within my role, I have decided on the different costume, hair and make-up that each character would appear in so that immediately the audience have the ability to start building relationships with the characters based on what they're wearing. I have also decided on the different lighting and colours that are to be used throughout the atmosphere as they would help create different atmospheres. Also, because I am the person behind the camera work, I decided on the positioning of the characters and objects within the frame and stated where within the frame they would appear. Within the role, I have also decided on where the sequence would be set (setting) and what iconography is to be included within the sequence at various different parts. Furthermore, within the role, I also had the duty to decide what the characters facial expressions would be and what their body language would be which would help the audience determine what feelings the characters are experiencing, This will make the filming/editing easier by having this specific job because there would be a clear structure of what is being included within each frame so that it would be easier and faster to film. In terms of editing, we have a clear structure of the different elements included such as lighting which would help us when it comes to involving different types of filters on top of individual frames to adjust the colour.



Bettie


Bettie has be assigned to different roles such as music producers and screenplay writer;

We decided to give Bettie the role of music producers as she tends to be more creative than us and enjoys her research into different types of music and sound effects. Also, she particular enjoys experimenting with different types of sound effects over the top of our sequence and coming to a conclusion of which sounds work the best and is better suited to different parts of the sequence. She was allocated this role instead of me and Kane because me and Kane enjoy more theoretical research whereas Bettie prefers more productive activities. Within this role, Bettie has researched into a number of different sound effects and music and experimented various sounds with our sequence at different parts and determined which ones worked the best and impacted the audience the most. Furthermore, she has also went back to previous research posts based on music and looked into different thriller films to see at what points certain sound effects would be played and also researched into what key elements they would create e.g tension. This would help make the filming/editing easier as she would know where the music and sound effects would be included so as the cameraman I would know how fast I should be doing certain camera techniques (panning, zooming in). This would also make the editing easier as we would be able to determine the pace of the scene (slow/fast) by how fast the music/sound is being played and at what exact moments they are occurring so when we edit we know where to involve certain editing techniques to make our sequence more successful

We have also assigned the role of screenplay writer to Bettie.This was because it was mainly her narrative that we decided to go ahead with so it would only be logical that she was screenplay writer because most of the narrative was her idea. Also, due to the fact that it was mostly her narrative, she would have more of a better understanding compared to myself and Kane. She would be better at developing the narrative as it would be more convenient for her to include more ideas that would make our sequence more successful. Within this role, Bettie has come up with the base narrative for our sequence in which she included the exact scenario that would be taking place however me and Kane have provided idea's to help and support her within her development. This would make the filming/ editing easier as we would have a clear structure of creating a storyboard in which we could follow to make our filming process faster. Furthermore, it would make the editing easier because Bettie would know at what points within the sequence, specific relationships are to be built between the audience and the characters so we could include different techniques within the editing process to support her relationship ideas.


Kane

As a group, we decided to allocate the role of Producer and Director to Kane;

We decided to assign Kane as the producer as he is generally a well organised person. He in comparison to me and Bettie, is more structured to organizing and arranging dates of when we are to film. Also, we found out that he is great at co coordinating and arranging for different people to appear within our sequence and is good for arranging people to come meet us so that we can film their scenes. He has the ability to create a well, structured schedule of different filming times and the days they are to be done. Furthermore, due to his past experience in media at GCSE we found that his skills in media work would be very useful within this role rather than either me or Bettie taking this role. Within this role, Kane has arranged different meetings and filming schedules of when we are to be filming and has arranged times that people outside our group can meet us to film. He has also covered all the elements within our film making sure that they are all appropriate and are suited towards a thriller genre. He has also ensured that our sequence is flowing properly, and that are elements are being used and created at the correct times and also ensure all of our timings are correct. This will make the filming/editing easier by Kane having this specific role as it will give me and Bettie the opportunity to focus on less as we then can concentrate on our roles. Furthermore, it would allow him to indicate where certain elements are too be used and created when we are both filming and editing as he would already have a clear structure which would then make it easier for both myself and Bettie.


We also decided to allocate the role of director to Kane as well. This was because he is more powerful and has a good stability when it comes to controlling the process than me and Bettie so we found that this would be an ideal role for him. Also, we found that he was very structured and good at ordering what is to be taking place in comparison to me and Bettie so this is a well suited role for him. He also has a clear mind of exactly how the sequence should flow and in what order the scenes should take place so we found that this would be ideal as the clear vision built a lot of confidence within the group. Within this role, Kane has ensured that our sequence is as successful as possible by making sure that all key elements have been created within the sequence, and that the positioning of the characters are all correct. He has also made sure that various relationships have been built between the characters and the audience by involving specific techniques at different points. He has also made sure that our sequence involves a wide range of techniques and conventions in order to make our sequence as thriller conventional as possible which would make our sequence more successful. This has made the filming/editing easier by him having this specific job as it makes it easier for the group as a whole especially for myself and Bettie as we can rely on someone within our group to take charge and power to make sure that our sequence is as successful as possible. In addition, me and Bettie know that someone in the group will use their vision and has the confidence to make it into a sequence and will make the general process easier and faster.



Bettie & Kane

We decided to allocate the role of actors towards Bettie and Kane. We used a few other people from outside our group to play the background characters however Bettie and Kane were the main focus. We decided to allocate this role towards these two as they are strong minded and have a great amount of confidence to have the ability to reveal emotions in front of a camera whereas I find that my personality tends to be very shy in front of a camera and that would be a weakness within our sequence so it would be more ideal to use confident people within our sequence. Within this role, Bettie and Kane will play the role of the two main actors. Bettie has played the role of the antagonist in which she kills Kane who is an innocent boy. They have taking this roles and displayed themselves as these characters so that the audience can see a clear contrast in the two different types of people.  This makes the filming/editing easier by them two having specific jobs as it allows us to elaborate and develop these two characters. Due to the fact that there are only 2 main characters, it give us the ability to have a bigger focus and attention on them. It gives us the opportunity to expand on the characteristics which would then help us determine what type of relationships are too be built with each character.


All of us

As a group, we decided that it would more ideal if we all contributed towards being editors. We decided this due to the fact that we all have different idea's and techniques that work well during different parts of the sequence. We are all as equally strong within this role as each other so there is no one in our group that should take complete control. Each of us are responsible for including and creating various editing techniques at different parts of the sequence depending on what the particular scenario is e.g montage for chase scene. Within this role, we all discussed where different techniques would be ideal and what type of impact they would have on the audience and how this would make our sequence more successful. We also experimented with different techniques to see what key elements would be produced and what type of impact they would create. Furthermore, we also experimented with what different relationships and feeling they would create within the audience. This made the filming/editing easier because we was working as a group with this role so it made it easier for us to create and develop ideas to make our sequence more successful. Furthermore, it relieved stress as no one was under pressure as editing techniques have to be exactly right in order for the sequence to be successful. When we were filming it also made it easier, as when we were filming we could discuss as a group where we think certain techniques should be included so that we could focus on the camera techniques to support the editing skills.


I believe that I did quite well in my allocated roles (director of photography and MES co coordinator) as I managed to film the sequence using various camera techniques that impact the audience and help build a better relationship with the characters. I also managed to successfully co-ordinate the MES elements as they all successfully was conventional towards a thriller genre. Also, the display within the frame was layed out and structured well, and also easily understandable for the audience which means they can build relationships with the characters. I also believe that Bettie done well within her allocated roles (music producer, screenplay writer and part of the actors) as she managed to successfully insert music and sound effects into our sequence which were conventional towards a thriller genre so they helped build key elements which then made our sequence more successful. Also, her creativity within the screenplay writer meant that we had a successful narrative to use within the sequence as a base and could develop by using different techniques to make the sequence more effective and give the audience the ability to start building relationships. Her role within the actors was excellent as she played the character of the antagonist who was successfully displayed and created various impacts on the audience. I believe that Kane done very well within his allocated roles (director, producer and part of the actors) as he was very well organised in arranging different filming schedules and organizing the group to film on different day. He also done very well in coordinating the group and giving the group members different roles. Furthermore, he direct commands towards the group showed that he had a clear vision of how he wanted the sequence to be displayed and that the flow of the sequence made it easier for the audience to understand the story line. Moreover, his role within the actors showed that he was dedicated and eager towards our project as he was prepared express an innocent character feelings in the sequence and display the fear he suffers of the antagonist. As a group, I believe we all done very well in the editing role as we researched into different techniques and experimented with them at different parts of the film. We managed to create various feelings and effects just by the way we edited the sequence and created numerous relationships between the audience and the characters. I find that if we were to do anything differently, we could do more roles as a group as the majority of the roles were allocated individually and the only one we done as a group was the editing. I find that we worked better as a group as we could get more feedback from our members and we also have the ability to develop any weak points which I find would make our sequence more successful as different areas within the sequence would have different impacts on the audience and would help them engage more within the sequence.

Group Storyboard - Miss Miller

Group Storyboards

The purpose of a group storyboard is so that all group members can collaborate their ideas together to create one, well developed idea which includes all group members strengths. Furthermore, it will show the development of our individual storyboards. We sat down as a group and looked at every members individual storyboards and identified the strengths and weaknesses. We took notes of the strengths from each storyboard so that we know what to include within the group storyboard. We also took notes of the weaknesses so that we could develop these and make them better so that we could use them within our storyboard. We decided the best features for each one to create for the group one by analysing each feature and analysing how it would impact the sequence and the audience and seeing what kind of relationship can be built between them and the characters within the sequence. 

We have created a group storyboard so that all members of the group have a clear structure of what is happening within the sequence. Also, it would make it easier for us to film as we would know exactly what were filming and what we need for each frame. We have taken and included specific elements from each other's individual storyboards because each member have different strengths and weaknesses and certain elements would impact the audience more and give them the ability to build specific relationships with the audience which would then contribute to making our sequence more successful.

We have taken different elements from different members and included them within our sequence;

Firstly, the use of low-key lighting was developed as it was used in all our individual storyboards, We agreed that this would be a successful impact on the audience as it would help the audience engage more within the sequence because the atmosphere is more mysterious and raising the tension throughout. We also find that the low key lighting would help to build up the suspense and tension within the atmosphere because the audience feel more paranoid that something is going to happen so they get scared as they fear the characters are in danger. From this, a relationship can be built between the audience and the characters and the audience would start to feel more endangered and sympathetic for the characters as the low key lighting would suggest that the characters are in danger so the audience get paranoid. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it would gradually build up the tension and suspense within the atmosphere which makes it more conventional. Furthermore, the low key lighting is mysterious and emphasizes a sense of danger which s also conventional towards a thriller. For this element, we have taken the inspiration from the clip "Saw V (The Pendulum)" in which the low key lighting was being used throughout the whole clip. We found that this was an effective element as it built up a lot of tension and made the scenario look more dangerous. This low key lighting can be seen in the storyboard throughout. 

From Bettie's individual storyboard, we included the use point of view camera technique when one of the characters is walking up behind Bettie when she's is crouched down next to Kane's body on the floor. We included this within our sequence, as it will build up the tension as it's from another characters viewpoint so the audience can feel more engaged within the sequence and also makes it more relatable to them because they are viewing the scenario as if it's their own perspective and that they are in that vulnerable position. Furthermore, the use of intensity and suspense would build up because it from a characters view point so the audience can relate to them and feel as if they are within the sequence. This can build a relationship between the characters and the audience because the audience feel more engaged within the sequence. Furthermore, the audience are seeing the scenario from their own perspective so as they are walking towards Bettie they feel more scared and paranoid which would lead them to feel sympathetic for the character's as they fear that these characters are going to get attacked. We took this inspiration from Bettie's storyboard as we all find that this was a key strength which could make our sequence more successful as it has an impact on the audience which is vital. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it creates more tension and raises the intensity as it makes the audience feel on edge as there is a clear display of the Bettie looking suspicious. We took the inspiration from the clip "The last house on the left" in which a point of view technique was being used when the female character was looking outside the window. This point of view can be seen within the storyboard when one of the characters is walking up behind Bettie when she is crouched on the ground.

From Kane's individual storyboard, we included the use of a high angle when the characters are walking into the forest at the start of the sequence. We decided to include this within our sequence as we find that this was a key strength between all of our individual storyboards as it creates a high intensity and tension because it makes the characters look more vulnerable and weak. Furthermore, it help the audience become more engaged within the sequence as it makes the audience feel more sympathetic as they start to feel that something bad is going to happen to the characters so this raises the intensity and tension. From this a relationship can be built between the characters and the audience because the character's look so powerless and weak therefore the audience would feel nervous that if any danger was too approach them then they wouldn't be strong enough to overcome the danger. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it makes the sequence build up more tension as the audience feel more on the edge of their seats as they don't want any danger to approach the characters as they are not powerful enough. This inspiration of high angle was also taken from the clip "The last house on the left" where the high angle is being used to look at the car. The high angle can be seen within the storyboard when the characters are walking into the forest to display their weakness and vulnerable.

I think our storyboard has been created successful as it includes numerous conventions that would then impact the audience and give them the ability to create a range of relationships with different characters. We managed to incorporate each other's ideas by identifying each members strengths and developing the weaker ones to make them more successful so that it would have a good impact on our sequence and audience. There as been compromises we have had to make such as where we would include certain techniques e.g high angle originally being used when Bettie is attacking Kane but we changed to where characters are walking to the forest.

Individual Storyboards

A storyboard is a graphic organiser in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualising a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence. The purpose of a storyboard is so that we would have a clear concept of how the sequence is going to be structure and will make it easier for us to film as we know what is going to be included within each different frame and what the order of them will be. This saves us time when filming as we will have a clear flow of the structure. We are going to be creating individual storyboards be creating a final group storyboard so that we are able to incorporate different ideas and make sure that we have planned the best possible sequence. I hope that my individual post will help my group storyboard as it will give me the ability to include my own idea's combined with my group members idea's and we will be able to have a well developed and effective storyboard because if we was to merge all of our good idea's into one final idea then it will impact the audience more making our sequence more successful.

To help contribute to this post, I created a storyboard based on my own idea of the sequence, consisting of different frame with a clear structure of the different elements that I would like to include within our sequence; 

This is the first page for the individual storyboard that I have created. This includes frames 1-4 which will be a small introduction to the setting and the characters involved within the sequence. The outside of the setting will be the first thing that the audience see, and they will see this through a long shot and panning. This will give them the general idea of the outside of the location that the sequence is being set in. I have decided to include this at this point  to give a brief introduction and to make the audience aware of the location so that they are able to see how isolated the location is so that when activities take place within the forest, it would create a better understanding of the possible consequences as they will now know that there is no one within reach to help them. This will build more suspense and tension towards the audience which is conventional towards a thriller genre as it will help build more tension between the audience and help engage them more. Furthermore after this shot taking place, the frame will capture the audience and take them inside the forest using a high angle and zooming in to show the characters walking in. This shot will show the appearance of the characters involved so that the audience can start to build their understanding of the characters which then will give them the ability to start building a relationship with them. Within this shot we have included the element of low key lighting. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it builds up the suspense and the tension throughout the sequence as the danger is more likely to approach the characters in the dark than a brighter setting. Furthermore this will help engage the audience more as they become on the edge of their seats as they wait for the danger to attack the characters. We have included this at this particular point because it would help build more tension and it creates a more dangerous feeling and will build more excitement within the audience. As the previous shot will show the inside of the forest, this shot would take the audience inside the forest and the darkness would alert the audience as it show a number of characters walking into a dark forest which then would emphasize the danger that lies within the forest. This will raise the tension immediately as the audience will now be alerted that there is a form of danger within the forest and also beware that the characters are all in danger which making our sequence more conventional towards a thriller. After the audience have a basic understanding of the setting, the shots would then start to focus on the characters more. This is where we have included the first on screen conversation so that the audience can start to build up their relationships with each individual character. To add elements to this scenario, I have included 'shot reverse shot' as the editing technique. Shot reverse shot is mostly used in films where a conversation is taking place and it is when one shot quickly follows another. I have decided to include the technique at this point as this technique is more convenient to include within a conversation. This is because the are a number of characters involved within the conversation so to help the audience stay focused on the characters, the technique as been applied. This will then help build more suspense and tension as this very realistic and will keep the audience on edge as they will await for the typical thriller genre behaviour to take place. Also, I have also included a 'close up' camera shot to included while the conversation is taking place. I have included this at this point as it will add more detail towards their facial expressions and help the audience build a better understanding of their characteristics which will then lead to building a better relationship. Furthermore, we also include a close up of the characters towards the end of the sequence however this is when they are aware of Bettie's true identity. This will also give the ability for the audience to notify the contrast in facial expressions before and after Bettie's identity is revealed but at this point the audience or any of the characters are not aware of her true identity. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it builds up a high intensity level of tension as the audience start sympathies with the remaining characters. This will help the audience build a better relationship with the characters as they are all normal and relatable to the audience so the bond would be stronger between the audience and the characters as they both are living relatable lifestyles. 

This was the second page I created in continuation of my storyboard. Within the 5-8 frames, the main narrative is the character playing with the dog (Bella).  This continuation starts of with the characters centered and a circular motion of panning taking place at this point. This will take place while the characters are standing within a low key lighting. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it contributes in the level of tension and suspense within the general atmosphere as the audience start to develop their knowledge on the dangerous scenario. I have decided to include these techniques at this point so that while the circular panning is taking place it will emphasise the danger that the characters are in and this will then help build the tension, intensity and suspense. Also, the characters are standing within a low key lighting region and the panning will display the isolated area within background so this will also help build up more tension em between the audiences as it is creating a more dangerous scenario. Once the panning has taken place, the characters then start to play with the dog so that this builds a more playful, and positive scene. The characters will start to throw sticks for Bella in order to create that playful atmosphere. I have included this here so that the sequence is more realistic which will then give the audience the ability to build a more relatable relationship. Furthermore, it will also help create some positivity within the sequence otherwise it would just be negative throughout making it less realistic which would then make it harder for the audience to relate to.  While the characters are play with Bella the frame would also show an extreme close up for her while she running after the stick and then returning with the stick. I have included the extreme close up at these point to help contribute into scenes that will occur later on within the sequence (once Bella goes missing). This will then help emphasise Bella's disappearance and help build up that sudden suspense and shock of when she goes missing but at this point those activities haven't happened yet so this will just be showing the close ups of Bella's movements and will draw more attention to her. I hope this will create some happiness between the audience and build some positivity, before Bella goes missing so that when she does the shock that is created will be more emphasized and have a bigger impact on the audience. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it create a sudden shock which is a key element within a thriller genre. Furthermore, it develops the suspense level as the enigma starts to be created as no one knows what has happened to the dog so this also makes the audience more engaged as they want to know what has happened to the dog.

  This is the third storyboard that I created containing the 9-12 frames in order to help with my sequence. At this point is where the tension levels and mystery starts to effectively build up. The start of this storyboard would be the characters throwing a stick for Bella and her running after it. However, this time she does not return and so the mystery starts to build as no one knows what's happened to her. When the stick is being thrown and she goes after it, it will include the same elements and techniques that were being used in the previous storyboard when this activity was happening then. After the dog does not return, I have included a long shot of the setting where the dog was expected to return. I have included this technique at this point so that the audience would now be aware of the scenario that the dog has gone missing mysteriously. Also it would show the isolation of the area and have a clear display that the dog is not to return. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it builds up the mysterious atmosphere along with the level of enigma as no one knows where the dog has disappeared to or what has happened to her. Furthermore, this gradually will also build up the suspense and tension levels as the audience suspect that something bad has happened to the dog and create curiosities that there is danger within the forest. This would help build enigma and suspense as no one know what has happened to Bella and what has caused the disappearance which makes the audience more alerted that the danger within the forest is getting more closer to them. Furthermore, I have decided that when this scene happens and the long shot is displayed, it would be silent. I have decided to make this scene silent so that it makes the audience more alerted and eager to continue watching. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it will help build up more tension as the silence would be a sign of more danger to occur. Furthermore, the silence could represent someones life end and be a sign that a death has occurred. This technique would help make the audience more paranoid as they suspect that this is a sign that the danger is approaching the characters at a rapid speed and is getting closer and closer to then. I hope this will create more sympathy for the audience as they will only believe something bad is going to happen to the characters in such a short space of time.

This was the fourth storyboard page consisting the 13-16 frames that I created in order to contribute towards my storyboard. This next four frames will be based upon the search for Bella as they group decides to split up in order to find her. Within the first frame of this storyboard page, I have included slow editing through frames 13,14 and 15 when the group decides to split up to look for Bella. I have included this technique because it creates more suspense within the audience as the mysterious mood starts to be created as no one knows where the dog is. Furthermore this is conventional towards a thriller genre as it will help start to build up the tension as the audience get paranoid whether the group are going to find her or not. I hope that this technique would help build up the tension and the curiosity between the audience as they are making assumptions that the danger that is within the forest it taking one character at a time. In addition, I have also included the technique of non-diegetic by including the idea of suspended music/sound effects in frame number 14 which when the group split up in different directions. I have included this technique at this particular point because it helps build up the tension and the suspense which is conventional towards a thriller genre because it makes the audience more aware of the scenario and makes them more paranoid for the characters because they suspect that something bad is going to happen to the remaining characters. I hope that this technique will help build up tension within the audience as the music that is being used should alert them that the danger is approaching them and that they should be more cautious of their surroundings. Within all of these frames, I have included the technique of low key lighting. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it builds up a high level of tension and suspense as it is more curious and easier for danger to attack the characters so this would be conventional. I have included this technique throughout these frames because it helps create that consistency of the danger and the tension that lies within the isolated forest. Also, it will constantly keep the audience alerted because the continuous low key lighting would suggest that the danger is not moving away from them. It also gives the impression that the danger is consistently following them as the low key lighting is always on them. I hope that this creates a lot of tension and suspense between the audience as the danger is not leaving them and is making the audience have a better understanding of the scenario making them more cautious and keeping them more engaged within the sequence because they want to keep alerted at all time as the danger is consistently building up within the sequence and that the audience are waiting for the mysterious behaviour to explained and revealed.  

The next storyboard page that I created is consisting of frames 17-20 which the main narrative is Bettie true identity being revealed to the audience and the other characters. The narrative is beginning when one of the characters sights Bettie in the distance crouching down on to the floor next to someone laying down (Kane). They then start walking towards her and taps her on the shoulder and she turns her face towards the camera revealing the blood around her mouth which immediately displays her identity of her being presented as a cannibal. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as the use of blood around her mouth is conventional towards a thriller. Furthermore, the use of blood around her mouth displays that she has either attacked or killed something so this indicates that there is a death which is conventional towards a thriller. This particular storyboard page then ends with the facial expressions of two witnesses being shown as they look petrified. Within this storyboard sheet, I have included the technique of slow editing in frame number 18 as one of the characters is walking up to Bettie crouching on the floor. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it increases the level of suspense and tension within the sequence as the slow motion helps the audience to acknowledge intricate details such as facial expressions and body language. We display this movement being presented in the form of a point of view camera shot. I have included the slow editing at this particular point as it will help build up the suspense because at this point the audience and the remaining characters are unaware of Bettie's true identity so they do not know that it is her crouching on the ground and they make an assumption that it's her because they can identify the clothes that she was wearing before so they suspect that it's her. This also builds up the curiosity and the intensity because the audience wonder what she is doing on the ground next to someone who looks dead and is laying dead. Her face cannot be seen so at this point the identity is still hidden. I hope that this will engage the audience more into the film as it raise their questions and suspicions of why this behaviour  is occurring. I also hope that it will emphasise the danger that lies within the forest. Furthermore, I have also included the technique of non-diegetic sound by overlapping a sound effect on top of the frame where Bettie turns around and faces the camera. I would intend to use a loud, screeching sound effect so that it would immediately alert the audience and create a sudden shock and surprise. I have decided to include this technique at this particular point because it would alert the audience immediately and give them a small fright so that it would make our sequence more conventional towards a thriller film. I hope that this would create a small shock and surprise in general because no one would expect Bettie to be the antagonist and would make it more conventional towards a thriller genre and then would make our sequence more successful.

The last storyboard page that I have created is the Page number 6 which consist of frames 21-24. This consist of the ending of our sequence and the narrative is when the characters are now aware of Bettie's true identity and her abnormal behaviour so they are frightened of her as they now know that she is responsible for Kane's death. This storyboard starts with the character that discovered Bettie's identity running towards the remaining characters and telling them about the scenario and then continues to them running away from Bettie which is where the chase scene occurs. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as the chase scene will display the contrast in levels of dominance and power. Furthermore, it is conventional as it will display a over powering antagonist chasing her vulnerable victims. The sequence then end when Bettie is standing behind a tree and is watching the rest of the characters and then fades out. I have decided to include the technique of fade at this point because it will then help to create enigma as no one would know who Bettie's next victim is or who she is going to target. I hope that the technique being included here will help create enigma because no one knows what's going to happen now and will create suspense within the audience because they will start to feel more paranoid and more engaged at this point of the sequence more than any other point within the sequence because it's the moment where the audience are going to be able to create the relationships with the characters the most because they will now be more knowledgeable about the scenario which is conventional towards a thriller genre. Furthermore, I have also included the technique of non-diegetic music in frame number 23 where the chase scene is occurring and all the characters are running away from Bettie. I have decided that I want to have a fast speeding music on top of the chase scene because it would sound panicking because the chase scene is supposed to make the audience more tensed and eager to continue watching. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as I believe that this would help create more tension and intensity within the sequence because it would help make the audience build a better relationship with the characters because they would feel more paranoid for them as everyone is now aware of Bettie's true identity so the emotions are strong.

I believe the audience will enjoy my sequence as it consist of many different conventions that are related to the thriller genre so it would make my sequence more exciting and interesting to watch. I have included a wide range of various conventions which will all impact the audience in different ways so there would be a mixture of emotions so the audience are able to build stronger relationships with the characters.

I have taken inspirations from films that I have analysed in previous post such as "The last house on the left" which is what I analysed in my cinematography research. This is relatable to my sequence as in the research I identified the close up within one of the characters facial expression where she is distressed. This relates to my sequence as after Bettie's true identity is revealed 2 of the characters have a close up camera shot of their faces looking scared and distressed so this is taken as an inspiration and can relate to my own sequence. Furthermore, I have also taken inspiration from the sounds research post where I analysed "Halloween H20 20 years later". I can use this inspiration and relate it to my own sequence because when the dead body is revealed in the film, a loud, screeching sound effect is overlapped on top of the scene and in my own sequence I have a similar sound effect when Bettie's identity is shown to the camera which immediately creates a sudden shock/surprise which is conventional towards a thriller genre. In addition, I have also taken inspiration from the clip from the film "Carrie" which is what I analysed in the editing research post. I can take inspiration from this post and relate it to my own sequence because Carrie's clip involves a reaction shot after she discovers a death and I have included a reaction shot when the two characters discover Bettie. Both character's within the two different films have a similar frightened expression on their face and both give the ability to build relationships with the audience.

When we create the group storyboard, we will incorporate each others ideas by analysing each member's individual storyboard and identifying the strengths and the weaknesses. After we have analysed each members storyboard we will create a group storyboard by combining all the strengths identified between all 3 members into the group storyboard. Also, if any of the narratives are different we will pick the best one to use in our final production. Also, if there are any good, basic idea's then as a group we will develop these so that they have a bigger impact. Within my sequence I hope that they will include my ideas such as the non-diegetic sounds when the chase scene is occurring so that this creates a dramatic level of tension and will impact the audience making them more engaged within our sequence which then makes our sequence more successful. I also hope that they include the idea of fade editing technique which I have included at the end of the sequence which would help create an enigma and build a strong relationship between the audience and all of the characters.

I find that my sequence is good because it's effect as I've included various conventions which would then create various relationships with all of the characters. Also, I find it's very conventional to a thriller as it includes many different conventions and is more unique than other typical thriller films which would then help make my sequence more successful. I find that some of the issues I have identified within my thriller is that I may have been too repetitive with certain technique which may cause the audience to lose a slight amount of interest. I believe this can be resolved within my group as they can help replace the repetitive technique with other technique which I may of not included within the sequence.

I have found this helpful with regards to filming my sequence because it has gave me a better understanding of the techniques that I am going to involve within my sequence and I now know where these technique are going to be included within the sequence so now I am able to identify where and when the audience are able to build relationships with the characters at different points. Furthermore, it has given me the ability to identify where I may of gone wrong and identify any flaws before we film our final sequence so it gives me time and ability to correct these errors and make changes before it's too late. Also it gives me a chance to use my own ideas and interpretate them into a sequence that I like rather than other peoples ideas interfering.
