Indivudal Storyboards- Miss Miller

Individual Storyboards
A storyboard is a graphic organiser in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualising a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence. The purpose of a storyboard is so that we would have a clear concept of how the sequence is going to be structure and will make it easier for us to film as we know what is going to be included within each different frame and what the order of them will be. This saves us time when filming as we will have a clear flow of the structure. We are going to be creating individual storyboards be creating a final group storyboard so that we are able to incorporate different ideas and make sure that we have planned the best possible sequence. I hope that my individual post will help my group storyboard as it will give me the ability to include my own idea's combined with my group members idea's and we will be able to have a well developed and effective storyboard because if we was to merge all of our good idea's into one final idea then it will impact the audience more making our sequence more successful.

To help contribute to this post, I created a storyboard based on my own idea of the sequence, consisting of different frame with a clear structure of the different elements that I would like to include within our sequence;

This is the first page for the individual storyboard that I have created. This includes frames 1-4 which will be a small introduction to the setting and the characters involved within the sequence. The outside of the setting will be the first thing that the audience see, and they will see this through a long shot and panning. This will give them the general idea of the outside of the location that the sequence is being set in. I have decided to include this at this point  to give a brief introduction and to make the audience aware of the location so that they are able to see how isolated the location is so that when activities take place within the forest, it would create a better understanding of the possible consequences as they will now know that there is no one within reach to help them. This will build more suspense and tension towards the audience which is conventional towards a thriller genre as it will help build more tension between the audience and help engage them more. Furthermore after this shot taking place, the frame will capture the audience and take them inside the forest using a high angle and zooming in to show the characters walking in. This shot will show the appearance of the characters involved so that the audience can start to build their understanding of the characters which then will give them the ability to start building a relationship with them. Within this shot we have included the element of low key lighting. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it builds up the suspense and the tension throughout the sequence as the danger is more likely to approach the characters in the dark than a brighter setting. Furthermore this will help engage the audience more as they become on the edge of their seats as they wait for the danger to attack the characters. We have included this at this particular point because it would help build more tension and it creates a more dangerous feeling and will build more excitement within the audience. As the previous shot will show the inside of the forest, this shot would take the audience inside the forest and the darkness would alert the audience as it show a number of characters walking into a dark forest which then would emphasize the danger that lies within the forest. This will raise the tension immediately as the audience will now be alerted that there is a form of danger within the forest and also beware that the characters are all in danger which making our sequence more conventional towards a thriller. After the audience have a basic understanding of the setting, the shots would then start to focus on the characters more. This is where we have included the first on screen conversation so that the audience can start to build up their relationships with each individual character. To add elements to this scenario, I have included 'shot reverse shot' as the editing technique. Shot reverse shot is mostly used in films where a conversation is taking place and it is when one shot quickly follows another. I have decided to include the technique at this point as this technique is more convenient to include within a conversation. This is because the are a number of characters involved within the conversation so to help the audience stay focused on the characters, the technique as been applied. This will then help build more suspense and tension as this very realistic and will keep the audience on edge as they will await for the typical thriller genre behaviour to take place. Also, I have also included a 'close up' camera shot to included while the conversation is taking place. I have included this at this point as it will add more detail towards their facial expressions and help the audience build a better understanding of their characteristics which will then lead to building a better relationship. Furthermore, we also include a close up of the characters towards the end of the sequence however this is when they are aware of Bettie's true identity. This will also give the ability for the audience to notify the contrast in facial expressions before and after Bettie's identity is revealed but at this point the audience or any of the characters are not aware of her true identity. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it builds up a high intensity level of tension as the audience start sympathies with the remaining characters. This will help the audience build a better relationship with the characters as they are all normal and relatable to the audience so the bond would be stronger between the audience and the characters as they both are living relatable lifestyles.

This was the second page I created in continuation of my storyboard. Within the 5-8 frames, the main narrative is the character playing with the dog (Bella).  This continuation starts of with the characters centered and a circular motion of panning taking place at this point. This will take place while the characters are standing within a low key lighting. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it contributes in the level of tension and suspense within the general atmosphere as the audience start to develop their knowledge on the dangerous scenario. I have decided to include these techniques at this point so that while the circular panning is taking place it will emphasise the danger that the characters are in and this will then help build the tension, intensity and suspense. Also, the characters are standing within a low key lighting region and the panning will display the isolated area within background so this will also help build up more tension em between the audiences as it is creating a more dangerous scenario. Once the panning has taken place, the characters then start to play with the dog so that this builds a more playful, and positive scene. The characters will start to throw sticks for Bella in order to create that playful atmosphere. I have included this here so that the sequence is more realistic which will then give the audience the ability to build a more relatable relationship. Furthermore, it will also help create some positivity within the sequence otherwise it would just be negative throughout making it less realistic which would then make it harder for the audience to relate to.  While the characters are play with Bella the frame would also show an extreme close up for her while she running after the stick and then returning with the stick. I have included the extreme close up at these point to help contribute into scenes that will occur later on within the sequence (once Bella goes missing). This will then help emphasise Bella's disappearance and help build up that sudden suspense and shock of when she goes missing but at this point those activities haven't happened yet so this will just be showing the close ups of Bella's movements and will draw more attention to her. I hope this will create some happiness between the audience and build some positivity, before Bella goes missing so that when she does the shock that is created will be more emphasized and have a bigger impact on the audience. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it create a sudden shock which is a key element within a thriller genre. Furthermore, it develops the suspense level as the enigma starts to be created as no one knows what has happened to the dog so this also makes the audience more engaged as they want to know what has happened to the dog.

  This is the third storyboard that I created containing the 9-12 frames in order to help with my sequence. At this point is where the tension levels and mystery starts to effectively build up. The start of this storyboard would be the characters throwing a stick for Bella and her running after it. However, this time she does not return and so the mystery starts to build as no one knows what's happened to her. When the stick is being thrown and she goes after it, it will include the same elements and techniques that were being used in the previous storyboard when this activity was happening then. After the dog does not return, I have included a long shot of the setting where the dog was expected to return. I have included this technique at this point so that the audience would now be aware of the scenario that the dog has gone missing mysteriously. Also it would show the isolation of the area and have a clear display that the dog is not to return. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it builds up the mysterious atmosphere along with the level of enigma as no one knows where the dog has disappeared to or what has happened to her. Furthermore, this gradually will also build up the suspense and tension levels as the audience suspect that something bad has happened to the dog and create curiosities that there is danger within the forest. This would help build enigma and suspense as no one know what has happened to Bella and what has caused the disappearance which makes the audience more alerted that the danger within the forest is getting more closer to them. Furthermore, I have decided that when this scene happens and the long shot is displayed, it would be silent. I have decided to make this scene silent so that it makes the audience more alerted and eager to continue watching. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it will help build up more tension as the silence would be a sign of more danger to occur. Furthermore, the silence could represent someones life end and be a sign that a death has occurred. This technique would help make the audience more paranoid as they suspect that this is a sign that the danger is approaching the characters at a rapid speed and is getting closer and closer to then. I hope this will create more sympathy for the audience as they will only believe something bad is going to happen to the characters in such a short space of time.

This was the fourth storyboard page consisting the 13-16 frames that I created in order to contribute towards my storyboard. This next four frames will be based upon the search for Bella as they group decides to split up in order to find her. Within the first frame of this storyboard page, I have included slow editing through frames 13,14 and 15 when the group decides to split up to look for Bella. I have included this technique because it creates more suspense within the audience as the mysterious mood starts to be created as no one knows where the dog is. Furthermore this is conventional towards a thriller genre as it will help start to build up the tension as the audience get paranoid whether the group are going to find her or not. I hope that this technique would help build up the tension and the curiosity between the audience as they are making assumptions that the danger that is within the forest it taking one character at a time. In addition, I have also included the technique of non-diegetic by including the idea of suspended music/sound effects in frame number 14 which when the group split up in different directions. I have included this technique at this particular point because it helps build up the tension and the suspense which is conventional towards a thriller genre because it makes the audience more aware of the scenario and makes them more paranoid for the characters because they suspect that something bad is going to happen to the remaining characters. I hope that this technique will help build up tension within the audience as the music that is being used should alert them that the danger is approaching them and that they should be more cautious of their surroundings. Within all of these frames, I have included the technique of low key lighting. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it builds up a high level of tension and suspense as it is more curious and easier for danger to attack the characters so this would be conventional. I have included this technique throughout these frames because it helps create that consistency of the danger and the tension that lies within the isolated forest. Also, it will constantly keep the audience alerted because the continuous low key lighting would suggest that the danger is not moving away from them. It also gives the impression that the danger is consistently following them as the low key lighting is always on them. I hope that this creates a lot of tension and suspense between the audience as the danger is not leaving them and is making the audience have a better understanding of the scenario making them more cautious and keeping them more engaged within the sequence because they want to keep alerted at all time as the danger is consistently building up within the sequence and that the audience are waiting for the mysterious behaviour to explained and revealed.

The next storyboard page that I created is consisting of frames 17-20 which the main narrative is Bettie true identity being revealed to the audience and the other characters. The narrative is beginning when one of the characters sights Bettie in the distance crouching down on to the floor next to someone laying down (Kane). They then start walking towards her and taps her on the shoulder and she turns her face towards the camera revealing the blood around her mouth which immediately displays her identity of her being presented as a cannibal. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as the use of blood around her mouth is conventional towards a thriller. Furthermore, the use of blood around her mouth displays that she has either attacked or killed something so this indicates that there is a death which is conventional towards a thriller. This particular storyboard page then ends with the facial expressions of two witnesses being shown as they look petrified. Within this storyboard sheet, I have included the technique of slow editing in frame number 18 as one of the characters is walking up to Bettie crouching on the floor. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as it increases the level of suspense and tension within the sequence as the slow motion helps the audience to acknowledge intricate details such as facial expressions and body language. We display this movement being presented in the form of a point of view camera shot. I have included the slow editing at this particular point as it will help build up the suspense because at this point the audience and the remaining characters are unaware of Bettie's true identity so they do not know that it is her crouching on the ground and they make an assumption that it's her because they can identify the clothes that she was wearing before so they suspect that it's her. This also builds up the curiosity and the intensity because the audience wonder what she is doing on the ground next to someone who looks dead and is laying dead. Her face cannot be seen so at this point the identity is still hidden. I hope that this will engage the audience more into the film as it raise their questions and suspicions of why this behaviour  is occurring. I also hope that it will emphasise the danger that lies within the forest. Furthermore, I have also included the technique of non-diegetic sound by overlapping a sound effect on top of the frame where Bettie turns around and faces the camera. I would intend to use a loud, screeching sound effect so that it would immediately alert the audience and create a sudden shock and surprise. I have decided to include this technique at this particular point because it would alert the audience immediately and give them a small fright so that it would make our sequence more conventional towards a thriller film. I hope that this would create a small shock and surprise in general because no one would expect Bettie to be the antagonist and would make it more conventional towards a thriller genre and then would make our sequence more successful.

The last storyboard page that I have created is the Page number 6 which consist of frames 21-24. This consist of the ending of our sequence and the narrative is when the characters are now aware of Bettie's true identity and her abnormal behaviour so they are frightened of her as they now know that she is responsible for Kane's death. This storyboard starts with the character that discovered Bettie's identity running towards the remaining characters and telling them about the scenario and then continues to them running away from Bettie which is where the chase scene occurs. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as the chase scene will display the contrast in levels of dominance and power. Furthermore, it is conventional as it will display a over powering antagonist chasing her vulnerable victims. The sequence then end when Bettie is standing behind a tree and is watching the rest of the characters and then fades out. I have decided to include the technique of fade at this point because it will then help to create enigma as no one would know who Bettie's next victim is or who she is going to target. I hope that the technique being included here will help create enigma because no one knows what's going to happen now and will create suspense within the audience because they will start to feel more paranoid and more engaged at this point of the sequence more than any other point within the sequence because it's the moment where the audience are going to be able to create the relationships with the characters the most because they will now be more knowledgeable about the scenario which is conventional towards a thriller genre. Furthermore, I have also included the technique of non-diegetic music in frame number 23 where the chase scene is occurring and all the characters are running away from Bettie. I have decided that I want to have a fast speeding music on top of the chase scene because it would sound panicking because the chase scene is supposed to make the audience more tensed and eager to continue watching. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as I believe that this would help create more tension and intensity within the sequence because it would help make the audience build a better relationship with the characters because they would feel more paranoid for them as everyone is now aware of Bettie's true identity so the emotions are strong.

I believe the audience will enjoy my sequence as it consist of many different conventions that are related to the thriller genre so it would make my sequence more exciting and interesting to watch. I have included a wide range of various conventions which will all impact the audience in different ways so there would be a mixture of emotions so the audience are able to build stronger relationships with the characters.

I have taken inspirations from films that I have analysed in previous post such as "The last house on the left" which is what I analysed in my cinematography research. This is relatable to my sequence as in the research I identified the close up within one of the characters facial expression where she is distressed. This relates to my sequence as after Bettie's true identity is revealed 2 of the characters have a close up camera shot of their faces looking scared and distressed so this is taken as an inspiration and can relate to my own sequence. Furthermore, I have also taken inspiration from the sounds research post where I analysed "Halloween H20 20 years later". I can use this inspiration and relate it to my own sequence because when the dead body is revealed in the film, a loud, screeching sound effect is overlapped on top of the scene and in my own sequence I have a similar sound effect when Bettie's identity is shown to the camera which immediately creates a sudden shock/surprise which is conventional towards a thriller genre. In addition, I have also taken inspiration from the clip from the film "Carrie" which is what I analysed in the editing research post. I can take inspiration from this post and relate it to my own sequence because Carrie's clip involves a reaction shot after she discovers a death and I have included a reaction shot when the two characters discover Bettie. Both character's within the two different films have a similar frightened expression on their face and both give the ability to build relationships with the audience.

When we create the group storyboard, we will incorporate each others ideas by analysing each member's individual storyboard and identifying the strengths and the weaknesses. After we have analysed each members storyboard we will create a group storyboard by combining all the strengths identified between all 3 members into the group storyboard. Also, if any of the narratives are different we will pick the best one to use in our final production. Also, if there are any good, basic idea's then as a group we will develop these so that they have a bigger impact. Within my sequence I hope that they will include my ideas such as the non-diegetic sounds when the chase scene is occurring so that this creates a dramatic level of tension and will impact the audience making them more engaged within our sequence which then makes our sequence more successful. I also hope that they include the idea of fade editing technique which I have included at the end of the sequence which would help create an enigma and build a strong relationship between the audience and all of the characters.

I find that my sequence is good because it's effect as I've included various conventions which would then create various relationships with all of the characters. Also, I find it's very conventional to a thriller as it includes many different conventions and is more unique than other typical thriller films which would then help make my sequence more successful. I find that some of the issues I have identified within my thriller is that I may have been too repetitive with certain technique which may cause the audience to lose a slight amount of interest. I believe this can be resolved within my group as they can help replace the repetitive technique with other technique which I may of not included within the sequence.

I have found this helpful with regards to filming my sequence because it has gave me a better understanding of the techniques that I am going to involve within my sequence and I now know where these technique are going to be included within the sequence so now I am able to identify where and when the audience are able to build relationships with the characters at different points. Furthermore, it has given me the ability to identify where I may of gone wrong and identify any flaws before we film our final sequence so it gives me time and ability to correct these errors and make changes before it's too late. Also it gives me a chance to use my own ideas and interpretate them into a sequence that I like rather than other peoples ideas interfering.

Planning Opening Credits - Miss Georgiou

Planning Opening Credits

The purpose of opening credits is so that audience can have an introduction of the actors/actresses names which will make the audience more knowledgeable about the film. They can also have a small introduction of the style of the film so that they know roughly know what to expect. Opening credits can also define/show the different job roles within the film e.g director, producer, music. Furthermore, the colour's being used within the opening credits can also define the style of the film e.g black symbolises death which links to horror styled film. However, the main purpose of the opening credits is so that the audience can have the knowledge of the film title which is the most important part of an opening credit.

Se7en's opening credits

Firstly, I have analysed the opening credit's of the film 'Se7en' which is a thriller film directed by David Fincher. I have decided to analyse this particular film's opening credits as it is based on the thriller genre therefore helping me with my own idea's as my sequence is a thriller genre and will also give me the opportunity to take inspiration from the opening credits and use it within my own sequence. The colour's within the opening credits consist of black and white which creates a more mysterious view on the sequence. The black displays that there is something that is secretive and hidden, and unknown which then creates a mystery. It keeps things bottled up and hidden from the world which then impact the audience by making them more eager to continue watching and makes them question what's going to happen. The white however displays the innocence, purity and completion. So together when the colour's are merged together it creates a lot of curiosity as this is now making the audience more doubtful as it is clearly displaying a contrast in good and evil also associating with the idea of death and mystery.  This is conventional towards a thriller genre as the contrast in good and evil is displaying that the idea of antagonist and protagonist are being included within the film. The style of the credit appears as if they have been handwritten by someone which makes the audience more eery and aware of the situation. This can represent the instability within a character which can create a mental, psychopathic image towards the audience. This is conventional towards a thriller genre as typical thriller genre would usually consist of an individual character who is mental and unstable, so the style of these particular credit's are representing an unstable character within the film which is conventional to a thriller genre. The opening credit's contain a variety of different thriller conventions such as unsteady movements of the camera which suggest there is an instability within the sequence. This is conventional to a thriller genre as it builds up the tension as it is making the audience more cautious as they find that it has specifically been set up like this to show that there is a mentally unstable character within the film. Furthermore, there is a low key lighting being used throughout the opening credits which then creates more suspense towards the sequence as it makes the atmosphere more mysterious as the audience can only suspect that they is danger within the sequence. Also, there is a continuous use of flashing lights which also displays a dangerous, instability within the sequence. This is conventional to a thriller genre as it builds up the intensity and tension as the audience are assuming that the flashing light's may be representing one of the character's life's as it makes it seem as if their life is on the edge and creates a sense of panic. There is also a use of iconography consisting of sharp object's such as knives which creates a sense of tension and panic which is conventional towards a thriller genre as it makes the audience more nervous and engages them more into the film. The order of appearance roles is scene in the order - production company ("... presents.."), producers, director, main actors, title of the film, continuation of characters, music, costume, editing, co-executive, photography, writer and then director. The order of appearance is based in terms that the vital roles are seen towards the start, then the not as important roles are displayed through the middle appearance and then another set of important roles appear towards the end of the credits. This is so that the audience will not lose their attention because if they was to put all the important roles all at the start then after the important ones come to an end the audience will automatically lose interest so if they put the vital ones at the start and end then the audience will be more interested and will become generally more knowledgeable of their roles.

My design idea

This is my design idea for the title for our opening credits within our group.To create this opening sequence, I used the software 'Final Cut Pro X' to ensure that I could include the effects and colour's to make the credits to have a bigger effect and impact the audience more. I used a characterized font to create the basic outline of the title then added a black background to ensure that the title would then stand out. This is conventional within a thriller genre as it makes the intensity levels rising the title is more bold and the audience will have a clear view of it. Furthermore, this makes the audience eery and question their original thoughts as the title looks more dominant and powerful making them feel uncertain.  Over the top of this layer, I added a blurry, colour effect to create an unfocused view on the title to display the instability within the sequence. I then added a natural looking, yellow-green colour because our sequence was being set within a forest so I find that it would be more ideal to use a colour that would match the setting. This is conventional to a thriller genre, as the forest colour's in the middle of a black frame suggest the danger as black is associated with death and the forestry colour tend to appear within the middle of the blackness which then suggest that the people within the forest are in danger and are being associated with death. This then makes the audience more paranoid as it creates the isolation which is a convention as it makes the audience doubtful of what is to happen to any of the characters within the setting.  I placed the title within the centre of the frame so that it immediately will capture the audiences attention as I believe the title is the most vital part of a sequence as it gives the audience a better understanding. This is conventional to a thriller genre as it immediately captures the audience attention making it more dominant and creates more fear and nerves towards the audience as it builds up the tension. The title consist of all capital letters to make it more bold and demeaning. This is conventional to a thriller genre as it creates a higher intensity which then makes the audience more paranoid and anxious.  After the title we would intend to include the actors being seen within the sequence next to their character, then we would include the director of the sequence, then we would include the producers and co producers, then we would include the smaller production roles such as cameraman, sound etc. We done this based on the levels of importance; the most important roles towards the start of the sequence then only the minor roles towards the end.

Bettie's design idea

This was Bettie's opening credits idea that she created to use within our sequence. I found that some of the strengths within Bettie's design idea is that it bold, eye catching, intriguing and that it display's a clear view as she has only used capital's which automatically draw the audiences attention. This makes the design more intense and rises the tension level as it creates a higher intensity within the general atmosphere as the boldness gives the ability to be  engaging the audience. Furthermore, she has included a red title which then symbolises the danger and blood which impacts the audience as it makes them more eery. This is conventional within a thriller genre as blood is a typical convention to be used within the genre as it stating a clear danger and then makes the audience more eager to continue watching as they want to find out who is responsible and is causing the danger. She has also included a black background which then may suggest that the use of the blood will eventually lead to somebody's death which is another key convention to be used within a thriller genre. This build up the general suspense as the audience are more engaged within the sequence as they want to find out who is going to die and how it will be caused. I find that some of the weakness are the style of the credits itself has she has used only a basic font which doesn't emphasize the title as much as it could. I also find that she could include an effect on top of the title to make the credits more conventional towards a thriller genre as the credits so far are only building up the tension. I believe if there was to be effects being included within the credits then there would be a possibility that the levels of suspense could rise which would then make the credits being used more conventional and that would then lead to making our sequence more effective. However, I still find that the credit's that she is including is matching the style of thriller that we are creating so it would still be effective to use within our sequence as it could still help create a sense of suspense if we was to use a fade on the end of each credit so could impact our sequence effectively.

Kane's design idea

This was Kane's opening credits design idea that he created to use within our sequence. I find that the strengths within this particular design idea is that the faded red underneath the title which is a similar tone to realistic blood which gives the impression of blood being included within the sequence which is a key convention towards a thriller genre as it increases the tension as the audience suspect who's blood it may be. Also, around the edge's is a faded black border which then suggest the convention of death being included which is another key convention however this time is build up the suspense along with the level of tension which is vital towards a thriller genre as it makes the audience more aware of the scenario and automatically captivates them as it gives them the ability to become more engaged within the sequence. I also like the idea that he has used only capital letters which then makes the title stand out more and automatically captures the audience attention to it which is what we want as the title is the most important part of the opening credits. I find that some of the possible weaknesses is that the style of the credits could be altered in order to produce a more effective impact towards the audience, as the font that is currently being used is not basic however isn't as effective as it could possibly be as I find since our general setting is being set in a forest the font could match that unstable look which would then also link to Bettie's unstable character. This would then help build more suspense and tension within our sequence. I also believe that instead of the blurred, pale colour being used inbetween the red and black along the edge, can be edited into possibly a green so that it could help contribute towards our sequence as it would help the audience become more knowledgeable about where our setting is being set as the pale colour that is currently there is irrelevant towards our sequence. This would then help build a higher level of tension as it would display the blood within the forest.  Apart from this, I find that this is appropriate to use within our sequence as it matches the style that we intend to create. Furthermore, the use of the blood will help impact our sequence more as blood appears to be one of the most important conventions being used within the sequence.

I believe the design idea that we are going to work on is Kane's. This is because Kane's design idea appears to be the most effective and contains the most conventions which is ideal for a thriller genre. Furthermore, if we was to make Kane's more effective so that it would have a bigger impact, we would only need to make minor changes such as colour's and fonts. In addition, in contrast to mine and Bettie design ideas, Kane's design seems the most appropriate and matches the style of our thriller the most which then helps our sequence to become more effective then leading to impacting our target audience. In terms of the appearance, we plan to firstly display the production team (MKB PRODUCTIONS PRESENT...), then the actors, director, cast (background characters), music, editors and sound. Then at the end of the appearance we will show the title in the centre of the frame. The credits will be overlapped on top of the start of our sequence when the setting is being shown from different angles and views. Just before the character's start talking the title will appear then fade out then only the sequence will properly start. After every role is displayed, each one would fade out to help create a sense of suspense so that they would be appropriate towards our thriller genre and will match the style of the thriller.

Character Discussion - Miss Miller

Character Discussion

The purpose of the characters is that we need people for the audience to build relationships with in, in order for them to be interested in the narrative. Before we start filming the actual sequence, we need to start planning each characters description and role within the sequence so that it makes it easier for us to start filming where exactly each characters is positioned within the sequence. Furthermore, if we already plan each characters then it will be easier for us to plan how the audience can build relationships with each character.

Character Roles

Bettie;
For the majority of the sequence, Bettie would be represented as any typical 16 year old girl. She would be a sixth form student just walking through the forest with her average friends. Her friends at the same would have the same background as her so at this point we assume that they are all within the same background. Bettie would be dressed in casual clothes just like any of the other group members so there background would be seen as the same. She would be seen as a typical teenager until the point where the sequence reveals her true identity of being a cannibal killer. This will help build relationships with the audience because Bettie throughout the majority of the sequence would be typically the same as the viewers of our sequence as the ages of our characters are the same as our target audience.  As Bettie is classed as 'normal' throughout most of the sequence the audience build a trust relationship with her as they are similar within their background so when Bettie's true identity is revealed this gives the audience a shock and breaks the trusted relationship that they had, so this helps the audience engage with the narrative better. This would make it easy for our audience to engage with the sequence and to the characters as they live the same lifestyle,are the same age and typically have the same background of being students. Bettie's character is conventional to a thriller genre as she is referred as the antagonist who is killing people, so her role as the murderer would be typical to the thriller genre. Furthermore, during the sequence she also has blood around her mouth which is a typical convention towards the thriller genre. However, she can also be classed as unconventional as her character is a female. Typically, females tends too be the weak, vulnerable characters however in this sequence the female is the strong, dominant character in contrast to the rest of the characters. This is unconventional as the female is not weak and contains a lot of power in which she has the ability to murder other characters.

Before                                                                                     After

Kane;
 In our sequence, Kane is referred to as Bettie's victim. Just like Bettie's role near the start of the sequence, Kane would be seen as a typical student just like her. Kane is a typical 16 year old boy who is a student in sixth form who does not have any peculiar behavior unlike Bettie.  Kane would be seen in normal, casual clothing just like the other characters so the audience assume that everyone is within the same background. Kane's character would be stereotypical to a thriller genre as Kane is displayed as the innocent victim so his role of playing the victim is stereotypical to the genre as his characters consist of him being vulnerable. I find that the characteristics consist of will help the audience engage more because Kane's characters is more relatable to the audience in contrast to Bettie's characters so because he is more relatable, the audience will then have the ability to build a more trusted, stronger emotional relationship with him as they can relate their everyday lifestyles to his. Furthermore, his character is also the same age as our target audience which makes the character even more relatable to build a relationship with. Also, most of our audience will most likely still be in education at school and Kane's character is seen a sixth form student so this can help develop a stronger bond with the audience so that they can engage and sympathize more with the narrative of the story as they will tend to build a more emotional relationship with Kane more than any other character because he is the only victim that the audience have witness be murdered.

Before                                                                                             After

The remaining characters within our sequence will not have a big role and are only seen as background characters. However, they way that they will be displayed will be very similar to Bettie's and Kane's appearance; as everyone in this 'group' has a close relationship with one another, they are all from the same age group and go to the same school. The characters will be a mixture of 3 boys and 3 girls so that the gender is balanced as a whole. All the background characters will be dressed the same, keeping their appearance casual but not too eye-catching as we would like the main focus to be on Bettie and Kane as they will have the bigger impact on the audience. This enables the characters to be stereotypical to a thriller genre as they will make the sequence more realistic as they are making the sequence more relatable too any of our audience's lifestyle so they can allow the audience to be more engaged within the sequence. The background of these characters are the same as our target audience, so they will have the ability to build the trust between them and the audience as they audience can relate their lives to the characters. Furthermore, the gender is balanced between the group and we find that our audience is most likely to have a balance in gender so this will help the audience become more engaged and build a stronger bond and relationship.

I find that all our characters have different roles on purpose so that we have a wide range of characteristics which then impacts on the audience more. I find that each character is conventional to a thriller genre is their own perspectives; Bettie is the antagonist who is also a cannibal which is extremely conventional to a thriller, Kane is seen as the vulnerable victim which is also very conventional to a thriller genre. The background characters will help make the sequence more realistic which will help make the sequence more conventional. We hope that this will emphasize the contrast in roles and help impact the audience by building two totally different relationships with the different characters. Bettie's role will help emphasise the evil that lives within her, and Kane's role will help enhance a more sympathetic relationship with the audience. The background characters will help emphasize the reality of this scenario and build a more emotional impacted relationship with the characters. Together, this will help create a wide range of emotions which will then allow the audience to become more engaged within the sequence.

I find this planning as been very helpful in preparation for our filming as it as helped us create a small character profile for the characters which then will give us the ability to start planning how each individual character is going to be displayed in order to support our ideas. Furthermore, it has helped us create a better understand of each character so now we know how to represent each character and how each character will impact on the audience based on their backgrounds and characteristics. It has also given us the ability to develop our previous idea's as now we have a better knowledge of how it impacts the audience and how it's conventional.

Planning Editing Styles - Miss Georgiou

Planning Editing Styles

Editing styles are vital within a thriller film because they create and build up the main key elements such as shock, surprise, suspense and tension which keeps the audience more engaged which then gives them the ability to build a stronger relationship with the characters which is essential within any film. Furthermore, different editing styles will have different types of impacts on the audience so this needs to be planned carefully in order for any film to be successful as the impact on the audience would need to be ideal for a thriller genre.

Firstly, we plan to use the editing technique 'Montage'. A montage is the speed of editing, where shots are quickly juxtaposed together to create excitement. This can be evident towards the end of our sequence when the chase scene is occurring and all the characters are running in different directions. We have chose to include this technique at this particular point because in a chase scene specifically, the mood of the general atmosphere and within the audience is ideally meant to be exciting and tense, and we want to have that impact at this point. It is important to include the technique at this point to build that excitement and make the audience more eager to continue watching as it will secure their attention. Furthermore, it will then create a lot of tension as it will help display the panic that characters are feeling at this point and this will then help create a stronger relationship between the audience and the characters. This editing style is conventional within a thriller genre as it raises the level of tension as the movement is rapid and is keeping the audience more eager, excited and on the edge of their seat. The audience are then automatically more attached to the film and make them more interested to continue watching the film. This technique will also help build relationships between the audience and the characters because it will emphasize the panic on the characters which would then make the audience more worried and nervous of what is to happen to the characters making the audience more scared. of what is to happen.

The second technique that we intend to use within our sequence is 'Fade'. A fade is when the screen fades to black and this often means an ending to the scene. We would like to include this at the end of our scene, so that after the chase scene is over and the characters seen as the victims are left alone, the frame would show Bettie's face hiding behind a tree and the sequence would then fade to black. We have chosen to include this technique at this point as it ideal as it's at the end of the scene and also would give the audience a sense of enigma as it is unknown of what happens next; whether the characters survive or whether they are Bettie's next victims. This technique is conventional within our thriller sequence, as it creates high levels of tension and suspense. The enigma leaves the audience not knowing what happens to the remaining characters so the suspense builds up as it leaves the audience feeling mysterious. In addition, because the audience don't know what's going to happen to the characters, it raises their tension because the unknown of what happens makes them more paranoid and worried as they only have the option to fear for the characters. This impacts on the audience making them more fearful and paranoid of what is to happen to anyone, they don't know the rest of the story so it worries them and raises their concerns. This helps build relationships between the characters and the audience as it creates more fear and agitation towards Bettie as the sequence ends making Bettie look more dominant than the rest of the characters. Furthermore, this then leads to a sympathetic and worried relationship for the remaining characters because the audience know the power that Bettie consist off so they are naturally scared of what is going to happen to the remaining characters. It also leaves the audience feeling mysterious of which particular characters Bettie is going to target next..

The third technique that we would like to include within our sequence is 'Slow Editing'. Slow editing is when clips are juxtaposed together at a slower paste and this is to create suspense. We intend to include this technique after the group has split up and are now searching for each other. At this point is when the typical thriller behavior is first sighted. The reason that we have decided to include this technique at this particular point is so that it will make the audience more curious of whether the characters are going to find each other and also creates a mysterious atmosphere as the audience don't know what to expect. Furthermore, it will start to build up the suspense as the curiosity between the audience will start to rise as they become more eager and on the edge of their seat of what is to happen. This editing style will make our sequence more conventional to a thriller genre because it will start to raise a lot of tension and suspense. The tension will be created as the scenario of what is happening in this current moment will make the audience more nervous and paranoid as at this is the point when curious behavior is occurring first so at this point is when the audience become more interactive with the sequence. The suspense is created from the mysterious atmosphere that it slowly building up as the audience are unaware of what is to come next and are totally oblivious of what Bettie's abnormal behavior is like. The impacts the audience as they are more eager and interested of what is going on as this is the first sign of mysterious behavior so the typical thriller genre atmosphere is evident here so it makes the audience more curious of the situation. This then helps them to build a relationship with the characters as they are getting more paranoid and worried for them as they are frightened of what could have potentially happened to them. They are not terrified on a high level yet because Bettie's behavior is unknown at this moment as it is yet to come.

I have found planning the editing styles that we want to include within our sequence very helpful and useful because it gives us the ability to extend on each technique and elaborate a further understanding for each technique on how it will impact on the audience by developing the effects and researching on how it will give the ability to help create relationships between the audience and the characters. Furthermore it also helps us to know what key elements (suspense, shock, tension, surprise) each technique will be creating so that we can make sure that our sequence is successful. It also give us the opportunity to assess where each technique will be included within the sequence so that the sequence is making sense and is keeping the audience on the edge of their seats and making them more interested at all time. This also gives us the opportunity to sit down as a group as we all had different ideas and to discuss which ones would have the best impacts and to let correct any faults that we may of had.

Group Planning - Miss Georgiou

In my Group there is myself, Bettie Cooper and Kane Faulkner-Wild. Group meetings are essential to have because all the members in our group think of different idea's in which can be contributed towards our opening sequence so these meetings give us the opportunity to sit down as a group together and discuss all of our ideas so by this our sequence could potentially be improve as they ideas may be more creative. Furthermore, group planning is essential to carry out as it helps us to develop our individual ideas into our final ideas and also helps us to discuss and elaborate our points. Also, it gives us a rough idea of the general guidelines that we need to follow in order to make our sequence flow. In addition, it helps us to create the key conventions (suspense, shock, surprise and tension) in certain parts of the sequence so that we know at what points the audience are going to be impacted and where they have the ability to build relationships. It also helps us to keep all of our planning within our sequence more organised and helps us to come to a final agreement. It also help us to build relationships and impact on our target audience and build a stronger relationship with the audience. It also helps keep the sequence idea's more organised and well structured.

In our first meeting we created a basic analysis of each element and wrote down a rough idea of how we are going to incorporate each of them into our sequence. Within each meeting we are going to analyse each one into more depth so that we can create the best idea's for each one. This was just creating the basic base of our sequence, then in each meeting we would develop these further to make them more impacting. Furthermore, it would give us more focus within each one so that we don't miss anything that could impact our sequence in a bad way. In the first meeting we decided to focus on the narrative only and we discussed the final group narrative for the opening sequence. We done this first so that it would make it easier for us to add in elements such as sound and editing now that we have a story line otherwise it would be more difficult for us. In this first meeting, we sat down as a group and brought all of our individual narrative and we discussed all the pros and cons of each idea. After we went through everyone's idea's we had to come to a conclusion to choose one final narrative. Within this meeting, we all came to a conclusion to include the idea of a cannibal as the antagonist as we believed that this was an unusual characteristic of an antagonist. Furthermore, as we developed this narrative we also came to a conclusion to make the antagonist a female by making Bettie the cannibal as we believed this was more of a unique narrative in contrast to a typical thriller narrative so this would be a bigger shock towards the audience and help to engage the audience more by them the ability to create more relationships with the character. We identified the strength's within each of our narratives and developed them along with the slightly weaker ones but still had potential. After this, we combined each of these together and discussed as a group when and where each point would be effect and impact the audience and give them the ability to create a relationship with the audience.

We will follow the code and conventions of a thriller genre by using sequences from previous research to contribute towards our inspirations and use technique's from them to make our thriller more conventional as these sequence have been successfully conventional and we could apply the knowledge from them into our own sequence. Furthermore, we will also follow the codes and conventions of a thriller by deeply analysing each elements that builds up a sequence and elaborate on the conventions and techniques that could be used that would make our sequence more effective therefore making our sequence more successful. We would discuss where to insert the key elements such as shock, surprise, suspense and tension as these are vital elements that would make our thriller genre more effective and impact the audience as it would give them the ability to create better relationships with the characters.

Moving forward to the next meeting we are going to analyse and plan the target audience. We have decided to do this next as if we do this next then afterwards it would help us include the conventions and elements as we would now have the knowledge to identify what is and what isn't appropriate for our sequence. Also, it would have a better impact on the audience as after this meeting we would be able to insert elements that would be more effective on the target audience as we would include elements that are suited to the specific set of audience so that the audience can build appropriate relationships with the characters. This meeting would help give us a better understanding of what to include within our sequence and what would help engage the audience more and impact them.

Within the 2nd meeting, we decided to focus on the target audience. We discussed a range of possible target audience. We went through and analysed a range of different age ratings, and compromised with each age, selecting the one that would be suitable and would give the ability to include more conventions as that would make our sequence more effective and engage the audience more. Furthermore, we discussed what would and wouldn't be suitable for each age and discussed realistically which one would make our sequence more successful as the sequence has to be as conventional to a thriller genre as possible. We analysed what particular conventions we could include within each age group and we came to the conclusion to make our sequence a 15+ as this would give the ability to include a range of conventions and make our sequence effective and also be appropriate for our sequence.

Moving forward to the next meeting, we plan to focus and plan the mise-en-scene. We have decided to do this, as now we have decided on our target audience, we will now know roughly what elements would be suitable and appropriate for the audience. Furthermore, we can analyse the general representation of our sequence as this is important for our audience. We can start to elaborate on our base narrative by including elements such as setting and iconography and develop this. After this meeting, we will have the ability to start building on our sequence as we would have included more elements to make it more effective and impact the audience more as it will help to engage more within the sequence.

In the 3rd meeting, we planned the different mise-en-scene elements that we would of liked to used within our sequences. Individually we all had different idea's of what we would like to use throughout the sequence so we discussed the strengths and weaknesses within each of our ideas and picked the best ones that were the most effective and the ones that we felt would help impact the audience more to engage them. Furthermore, we had to discuss which ones would be suitable for our narrative as it wouldn't be as impacting if the elements of the film didn't match the narrative so it's extremely vital that we focused on these elements and chose wisely the correct one. We discussed the different elements such as setting in which we all agreed on the idea of the forest as the use of isolation would be conventional towards a thriller genre as the setting would be more haunted and raise the tension and suspense within the atmosphere. We chose to use only the dog and sticks for the dog as the iconography as we have included a cannibal within our narrative so any weaponry is irrelevant towards the narrative. We decided on a low key lightening as we felt that would be the most effective for our audience as this would build up more suspense and tension towards them. We decided on a basic appearance on the characters as we have only had a small discussion only the actual characters so we decided to come back to this but we chose that all characters including the antagonist was to look realistic and casual so that the audience have the ability to relate to the characters which would help them engage more. This would include the character's been represented in casual clothes so that they have the ability to relate towards our target audience and would engage them more and give them the chance to build a better relationship with the character as they can relate to them more.

In the 4th meeting, we planned and focused on the different cinematography techniques we could include. Focusing on this was important as different camera techniques have the ability to create different key elements (tension, surprise, suspense) so it was important that we made a wise chose of when and where we were to include these camera techniques as the techniques had to be inserted at the right times in order for the moment to be effective and also impact the audience. We discussed a range of potential idea's that we could include and we chose different ones to include at different times so that it would help create the key elements e.g zooming in would help create a higher level of tension.

In the 5th meeting, we discussed the different sounds that we could include. We discussed and analysed a range of different types of potential sounds that we could include within our sequence. We decided that we needed a range of different types of sounds (diegetic, non diegetic, on screen, off screen) so we analysed different ones from each category. As the non diegetic sound we came up with a conclusion to include a type of music that would gradually build up and increase the intensity. We're also intending to include a music of a nature sound to make the sequence realistic so the audience can become more engaged. We also compromised to use an on screen sound such as the characters walking on the leaves which would build up the tension and make the sequence more realistic. Once we chose the best sounds from each category we had to analyse where within our sequence we would include these as it is vital where they are included so that they can create the elements and atmospheres that we need in order to engage the audience and make our sequence more conventional towards the thriller genre e.g the high level tension music when characters are walking behind Bettie to increase an immediate level of tension.

In the 6th meeting, we discussed the different editing styles that we could include within our sequence. This was an important discussion as we could combine all of our different ideas and develop them into well effective ideas. Editing was important as these would help contribute to our key elements and atmospheres. Furthermore, editing techniques can also build up to the key elements such as tension, shock, suspense and surprise. We had to be precise when selecting the ones that we intended to use as a slight error within our editing could ruin our sequence all together. It was important that the editing made the sequence more effective so we had to chose an editing technique that would impact the audience e.g slow editing would build the level of suspense.

In the 7th meeting, we discussed a variety of potential opening credits. This was important as it would be the first thing that the audience would acknowledge and so would give off our first impressions. Furthermore, it would also give the audience first impressions of our sequence therefore we need to create a set of opening credits that would make the audience interested and engage them more into our sequence. Also, it was important that we chose an opening credit style that would also match the style of our sequence as they both would have to look incorporate in order to be effective. We decided to use a forest colored text for each piece of writing since the setting we intended to use was a forest. Also, we agreed to use a blurred, terror-ed style of text so that it would link to a thriller genre and make our sequence more conventional therefore making it more successful. We created the title so that it was a black background and the title was in the centre and was red so that it was seeking more attention and would engage the audience more and it is more bold and eye-catching.

The 8th meeting was about planning the characters. Within this meeting, we discussed the different types of characters that we wanted to include within our sequence. Once we had chosen a set, we analysed them into more detail by developing features such as appearance and age. This was important as we needed the characters to appear in relation to their personality as the appearance of each character would give the audience their first impressions. We agreed to make the characters all similar looking as then it wouldn't give off any hints and so when the antagonist is revealed it would be a bigger shock to the audience which is conventional towards a thriller. Furthermore, we also discussed what each characters role was and we analysed that it would be more intriguing if the antagonist was to be the one female character (Bettie) as the would create more of a shock and surprise towards the audience an would engage them more as it's unexpected. We also decided the antagonist should have a hidden identity so that the surprise is bigger and would create a bigger shock which would then help to create a better relationship with the audience. Also, we analysed each characters background as this would be important towards the audience, and we came to the conclusion to make the characters school-kids as this would be more appropriate for the target audience as they will have the ability to relate to the characters and will also help them engage more and also build better relationships with them as the sequence would be more realistic.

In the 9th meeting, we decided that we need to plan and create a group storyboard. This meeting was all about collaborating all of our previous meeting idea's into one big idea of the sequence. We discussed a potential order for the sequence in which we thought the narrative would fit in. We used our plans from previous planning (narrative, sound, editing etc) to help us within creating a group storyboard as it was important that the sequence flowed as it would impact on our audience determining how engaged they would be within our sequence. Furthermore, planning the group storyboard had to be as accurate as possible, as this would give us roughly a clear structure of how each frame within the sequence is going to be layed out and also would determine the length of our sequence roughly. At the end of the meeting all group members agreed that the sequence would be more effective if the narrative was to build up throughout the given time, and then towards the end release the elements that have been built up so that the sequence is more conventional towards a thriller, and would also help the audience to engage more as each scene would make them more eager and on the edge of their seats. The timing would help as it would give us an idea of whether we need to include more frames but adding more details to our sequence so that the frame can be extended in order to fill the 2 minutes.

In the 10th meeting, we discussed the filming schedule. We analysed and elaborated on the different days that all members of the group were available. This was important as we had to choose specific days and times in which all group members could attend as it would be inconvenient and would cause problems if we selected days that members couldn't attend. Once we had chosen the filming days, we then discussed what specifically was to be filmed on each day. This was an important discussion as it gave ideas of what we had to bring to the scene and also suggested whether we needed anything e.g later time would require a torch. This also gave us a plan of what specific equipment and iconography we had to bring on each day depending on what scenes we were filming. We chose the same location for every day as that would make it easier for us to film however we just use different areas of the same location each time. We also discussed that it would be easier for all group member's if we were to film weekdays after school as that would be more convenient for everyone. We also discussed on the different camera shots and techniques we would be using on each day as they would determine whether we need to bring equipment such as tripods. Also we analysed the appearance of each character on each day to also contribute to our knowledge of knowing what we need to bring on each day and whether any other equipment such as make-up is needed.

In the 11th meeting, we discussed the risk assessment. This was an important discussion as we had to discuss the possible risk and how they could be prevented and solved to keep our members saved. Also, this was important as the safety of our characters were vital as that is the main priority, keeping our characters safe. Furthermore, not only did we discuss the risks that could happen to us, but we planned a table to write down all of our solutions of how they could be prevented and what we would do if one of them was to happen. We created a table which listed a range of different risks and the solutions and we learned these so that we know what to do if one of them was to happen to any of our members. For example, we found that falling out of a tree could be a dangerous risk/hazard so in order to prevent this from happening one of the group members could bring a ladder so that anyone that is required to be in a tree they shall just use the ladder to get on and off the tree.

In the 12th meeting, we planned a summary of the whole thriller. We planned and discussed on how we was going to film and had a brief summary of every other meeting that contributed towards this sequence. Furthermore, we recapped on all of our previous meetings and we developed on any weak points that we noticed. For example we changed where the tension music was to be used as we found that inserting it at another point within the sequence would be more effective. We summarized all our previous meetings, and we discussed the filming schedule once again and then went and filmed our sequence.

In the 13th meeting, we discussed on how we could develop on our rough cut by making it more effective in different ways. This could be done buy adding more thriller conventions or using a wider range of editing styles which would help engage the audience more and make our sequence more successful. For instance, we found inserting the slow/fast editing at various places would build up more tension therefore would be more effective and help to engage the audience more. Also, if the sequence is more effective, then it's more likely to draw the viewers attention and also engage them more. Furthermore, the use of more conventions and editing styles could also create a high level of the key elements (surprise, tension,suspense, shock) which would impact the audience more.

Meetings and discussions are important to carry out as it helps our group to be more organised and also helps us create an easier structure for the group in the filming process. This would then make the filming process more easier as we would know what we're doing. Furthermore, it is vital that as a group we sit down together and discuss our different idea as each group member will have different opinions. Also, these group meetings will give the opportunity for the group as a whole to develop any weak points within the sequence so that the sequence would be more effective and impact the audience more as this is important as it would make our sequence more successful. Group meetings are also important because as it gives the opportunity for all group members to give their opinions and make sure that everyone within the group is satisfied.

Our group worked extremely well together, as we developed each individual as a group so that they would become more effective. In each meeting we managed to analyse each different element very well by discussing in great details what the weak and strong points where. Furthermore, if there were any weaker points, as a group we developed these so that they were more effective. We worked well on combining and collaborating all of our different ideas and creating a very effective sequence plan in which we hope will be successful.

Planning Mise-En-Scene - Miss Georgiou

Planning Mise-En-Scene

Planning Mise-En-Scene for our sequence is extremely important as this consist of the most vital elements within our sequence. This planning needs to be planned thoroughly and carefully as these are the main elements that would then impact on our audience therefore we need make these a priority to make our sequence successful. We also need to be aware of what we are including within our sequence as it is vital that the audience are able to build relationships with the characters in a certain way.

Setting and Iconography

For the setting we have chose our setting to be based within a forest. We have chose to base it within a forest as a forest tends to be a typical thriller genre setting as it impacts a lot on the audience; the majority of the time, forest are lonely and isolated therefore putting any characters within the region in danger as there are no surroundings or facilities to support if there are any problems. This is an ideal for our sequence as we want the audience to think that the characters are in a dangerous position and if they are seen in a forest then the audience will be able to have a clear understanding that the characters would be in a dangerous position. After the shock of Bettie revealing her true identity, the audience will immediately turn their concerns to the remaining characters and think about the isolated region that they are in and automatically assume they have got their lives at risk because of the lack of surroundings an support. This setting will be able to be identified throughout the entire sequence too make sure that our audience are fully aware of the region and the potential consequences. This setting is conventional to a thriller because it builds up a lot of tension and suspense throughout as the general atmosphere is acknowledging and being aware that the characters are in danger so this keeps the audience cautious of what could happen to either of them. Mainly it is being suspense being built up, up to the point where Bettie's identity is shown because there is a lot of isolation around the characters and displays the loneliness. After Bettie's identity is revealed the element of tension is built up to a high level immediately because the remaining characters are now in severe danger so the tension is built up because the audience are now aware of the scenario so they are panicking and are paranoid of what is going to happen to the remaining characters.

When it comes to iconography, we are planning to include iconography such as sticks and balls for the dog to play with at the start of our sequence. We have chose this so that it would build a happy atmosphere so that when the dog mysteriously disappears a sudden shock and suspense would easily be able to gradually build up. If we to not include this type of atmosphere then the scene would be too easily predicted and we want to shock our audience so that they do not know what to expect within our sequence otherwise it will not be a successful production as the key elements would not have the opportunity to be created. This scene using the iconography will be able to be identified at the start of the scene where all of the characters are talking among themselves while playing with the dog at the same time. This is conventional to a thriller genre as the use of the iconography would create a happier atmosphere which then would contrast into a negative, suspended atmosphere making it easier for the audience to build relationships with the characters and build up the tension. Furthermore, because this is a realistic activity that happens on a daily basis it makes the narrative more relatable and easier for the audience to relate to this activity and build a stronger relationship with the characters.

Lighting and Colour

For this element we have selected to use low-key lighting and keep the colour fairly dark but adjustable so that we are still able to observe the characters. We have selected this particular lighting and colour so that it creates a more mysterious and daunting atmosphere that would then impact on the audience by creating a more suspended atmosphere which then would gradually build up the tension making the audience more paranoid and giving them the ability to start to build relationships with the characters. This lighting and colour will be able to be identified throughout the entire sequence so that the audience are kept on the edge of their seats because they don't know what to expect. This element is vital and conventional to the thriller genre as it creates a lot of suspense throughout the sequence which builds up the tension between the audience because the darkness makes the audience aware that anything can happen to the characters because they have put themselves in a dangerous position helping the audience build a fearful relationship with the characters. Furthermore, the darkness would display to the audience that they could be attacked at any time because they cannot see their surroundings. Moreover, we have still kept a small amount of light within the sequence so that we are still able to see the characters faces otherwise if it's too dark we will not be able to see the intricate facial expressions which would impact on the audience.

Costume, hair and make-up

With regards to the costume, hair and make-up we have kept them all simple and casual up to a certain point when Bettie's make-up changes to show the blood round her face however the remaining characters appearance stays the same throughout;

Bettie's appearance from the start of the sequence up to the point where her identity is revealed stays the same. She would be seen in casual clothes with her hair and make-up worn like any typical 16 year old female. The concept behind this idea is so that her relationship between her and the audience can be built as she would be referred to as any average female of her age which is the same ages as our target audience so the audience would be able to find her relatable and can link to her every day life. With Bettie being the antagonist in our sequence, we do not want to reveal straight away that she is who she is because we want to include the element of shock to the audience so that this would impact the audience once her identity is revealed. For this reason, for the majority of the sequence we want her to be seen just like any of the other characters so that the audience do not expect her to be a antagonist and also the surprise element would be used. This is conventional to a thriller genre as once her identity is shown just by the appearance of her the element of shock and surprise would be immediately created  and impacts the audience straight away; because most of the sequence Bettie is seen as any other female her age, the audience can relate to her and build a trusted relationship however when her identity is revealed the trust is broken and the opinions would change straight away. Furthermore, the element of blood being included within the sequence would also be conventional towards a thriller.

Based on the other remaining characters, they would also be seen as teenagers their age however they appearance stays the same throughout the sequence unlike Bettie's. The purpose of the remaining characters appearances staying the same throughout is show that they all fit within the same category of being victims or potential victims of Bettie. They would be seen in a every day lifestyle clothing with their hair and make-up so that the audience have the ability to build a trusted relationship with them as they can relate to the characters as the appearance and backgrounds of the characters and the same as our target audience. This is conventional to a thriller conventions as these characters are all from the category of Bettie's victims so this will create an element of tension between them and the audience. Furthermore, it also creates suspense as for most of the sequence they are dressed almost the same as Bettie who is the antagonist so this creates a mysterious atmosphere with suspicion whether there are any hidden identities of whether Bettie is associating with any of these characters.

Facial Expressions and Body Language

The facial expressions and body language would be mutual throughout the sequence up to various points within the sequence;

At the start of the sequence when all the characters are grouped together and are just walking through the forest, they would have the typical facial expressions and body language as any other teenager at their age during a scenario like this. The purpose of  this is, is to display that all the characters are from the same background and to show this is just an ordinary day like any other. At this point, all the characters appear to be the same because we do not want to reveal anything yet as we want to start the sequence quite casual so that the audience are able to relate to the characters and their activities making it easier for the audience to build relationships with the characters.

Once the dog then disappears, there is a change - each of the characters facial expressions change as they notice the disappearance so they know something is wrong. By this time they are all starting to become scared, alerted and also confused by what is going on. This can be easily seen by the change in their facial expressions. Their body language starts to change aswell as they know there's something wrong so they start to become tense and paranoid  so their body's become more tensed as they are getting more and more scared and alerted. This impacts on the audience as know the audience are eager to know what is going on and why this type of behavior is occurring. Furthermore, they also are confused as such to what has happened to the dog and why it has mysteriously disappeared making them more cautious and paranoid. This creates a fearful relationship with the audience as they wander if the next disappearance is going to occur and whether it is going to impact on one of the characters.

Once the group are split up and come and find that Bettie is a cannibal and has killed Kane, their facial expressions are the most scared that they have been throughout the entire sequence. Their body language starts to strain as they are panicking and are alerted straight away so are running to save their owns lives. The camera would display a close up view of the characters faces once they discover Bettie's abnormal behavior as the intricate fear and details in their expressions would be able to be seen. This is relevant so that the audience have the ability to build their sympathetic relationships with the characters as they experience the terror within their faces.

Once the frame has revealed Bettie's behavior her facial expression and body language also changes once this is shown. Her facial expressions is now demonized so that a clear view of her showing that she is the antagonist which can be seen. Her facial expression would automatically turn serious and a mysterious haunting face would be seen to represent her true identity. Furthermore, her body language would change as she is calmer than the rest of the characters to show that she has no fear of anyone else and to represent her dominance over the remaining characters,unlike the other characters who are running around everywhere to display their fear of Bettie. This will help build relationships with the audience as they are now seeing the power within Bettie so they are now fearing her as also feeling sympathetic towards the other characters because they know that Bettie easily over powers them.

This is conventional to the thriller genre as all the key elements are being presented within the sequence; the suspense gradually builds up once the understanding of the dogs disappearance is shown so a mysterious atmosphere creates the suspense at this point within the sequence. The surprise/shock is being shown once Bettie's identity and Kane's death is shown which impacts the audience because the trust within the relationship with Bettie is now broken. The tension at the end when Bettie is going after the remaining characters is built because we do not know whether the characters are going to escape or whether they can defeat her. We need a variation of these elements in order to contribute towards our sequences success so that the audience do not know what to expect.

Positioning of Characters/Objects within the frame

At the start of our sequence all characters would seen in the frame all together however when it comes to roughly the middle of the sequence the characters split up in order to find the missing dog when they split up in a set of 2 and 4. Once the victims discover Bettie killing Kane, it would just be Bettie and Kane within the frame so that it would emphasize on this particular scene as this is the most vital part of the sequence as this is what impacts the audience the most. After this is shown, all the remaining victims are now in one frame to display their vulnerability and we section Bettie in a separate frame going after them to show her dominance and the fear she creates on other characters.This is conventional to the thriller genre as we see the clear contrast of the victims and antagonist and we can see a clear display of the inferiority. Furthermore, in Bettie's identity frame we see the emphasis on her to show her dominance and power which then creates the shock on the audience. Furthermore, on the chase scene at the end when Bettie and the victims are in separate frames, we feel the tension that is being created as we are not knowing what it to expect or whether the victims are going to escape or not.

I have found this planning on the Mise-En-Scene really helpful as it has gave me a better understanding of what is to be included in each of the Mise-En-Scene elements so that when it comes to filming our sequence we know exactly what is to be included in each category. It also gives us a better plan of how the layout of the sequence is going to be so that the relationships with the audience can be built together efficiently.
